Introduction

Instant Messaging is really tough on a 68K Mac. It's even tougher on an emulated 68K Mac. ICQ and AIM have ancient unsupported clients that might work on a real Macintosh, but I have had no success using them in my emulated machine running System 7.5.5 (Update: Forum user SSS has described how to use the 68K version of AOL Instant Messenger inside of Basilisk II). All of the web-based IM clients that I've tried do not run in any 68K compatible brows…

Introduction

Tragically, developers have stopped creating software that will run on a 68K Macintosh. But thankfully, old Mac aficionados have some options. What follows is a list of software that will run on your emulated Macintosh. I'm a big fan of System 7.5.5 (which is free), so I've only listed software that is compatible with it. These titles have all been tested to work in Basilisk II. And, of course, the software should work on a real 68K Mac.

Introduction

Okay, so I did some bench testing of some emulators that I use frequently. The tests are adapted from some of the “real world” tests that Jim did back in the day. I carried them out in a fresh install of System 7.5.5. I used a ROM with a checksum of 06684214, emulating a 68040 processor. I gave each emulated Macintosh 32 MB of RAM, 256 colors and a screen resolution of 800×600.

Enable typedefs in slirp_config.h

The old homepage of Jeff Bargmann's MacVision went away forever. It's a bit surprising that whenever I got digging around online for some information about an obscure topic, I often end up on a Geocities page built in the 1990s. Indeed, when I was writing the Executor s…

It's April!

Welcome to April!

I'm still travelling, so updates will continue to be sparse. But I do hope to catch up with wiki updates and at least keep that stuff fresh.

But meanwhile, Cat_7 uploaded to the forum a slightly modified sheepshaver executable for Windows. It fixes a minor problem when running Appleshare IP 6.3. Download it here.

I did a bit more poring through the ol' emulation vault.

I discovered one more delightful blast from the past: CharredPC's Emulation Oddities. A neat old site from 2001ish. It contains a couple nice articles, and a review of “WORM” that might actually be helpful to some people! It was built by “CharredPC,” an old Internet crony of mine whom I unfortunately haven't spoken to for a couple of years.

Due to core limitations you can only have 4 heads right now, but that should be fixable Wink Also, System 7 virtual memory now works fine, although it's kind of silly since you can just give the emulated Mac II 128 megs of RAM.

Introduction

CherryOS was a knock-off of PearPC developed in 2004 and 2005. It used code from PearPC and HFVExplorer, but didn't meet its GNU Obligations. It died a quiet death in October of 2005.

Read about the history of CherryOS over on Wikipedia.

Mini vMac for Intel Mac available

There is also now a beta of Mini vMac for Intel Mac, available at http://minivmac.sourceforge.net/beta/index.html. Mini vMac can be used to run the very earliest Macintosh software. For slightly less early software the Basilisk II emulator may be preferred, for color and other features. The Mini vMac FAQ page (at http://minivmac.sourceforge.net/faq.html ) briefly describes some of the differences.

Stardock honcho Brad “Frogboy” Wardell has let loose a bunch of complaints about the current state of the “skinning community” over on his site.
Check it here.

Meanwhile, a quote over on Teknidermy (but one that I cannot find in the original posting... maybe it was removed?) seems to hint at the end of ObjectBar (nee MacVision): “Already, there's consequences. There will be no ObjectBar 3. It's too expensive to develop and there's too little help from the community to justif…

Over in the forum you can now new builds of SheepShaver and Basilisk II. These correct an error that happened when the emulators were run in full-screen mode.

It's very cool, I think, that the emulators are still patched-up by dedicated users. Big thanks to forum member vasi for these fixes.

Author's Introduction

My reason for installing Fusion was my demand for a Mac II emulation with at least 256 colours and a working sound system.

Basilisk II does a fine job running System 7.1, but unfortunately some of my old games don't play sound. With Fusion they do, but Fusion can only be run from DOS or a DOS based Windows system.
If you own a fairly fast Intel or AMD machine with a dual core cpu and 2GHz clock speed or better, you may find that Fusion with DO…

I sent a newsletter out to all members who are registered to the emaculation forums. There isn't much going on in the mac emulation community, but I did include a few of the things in the postings below. If you get this email, please reply to it, just so I know that you got it. Also, I have finally stopped the mass registrations on the forum. We now have about 30 000 fake users that need to be killed. I will try and get rid of them somehow.
Happy Birthday Emaculation!

I can't believe I missed this. E-maculation has been around since before I even got internet access, and the birthday has been mentioned before. I (we) seemed to have missed it last year as well. Anyway, E-maculation was started in May 1999 (I got internet access in November 1999). This would make the site 8 years old! Although there is still no new emulation news as far as I'm aware. But the SheepShaver package that I mentioned a couple of months ago is no longer on…

FAQ

Q. What is an Apple Lisa? Is it the first Macintosh?

A. No, this isn't the first macintosh, although through installing MacWorks on your Lisa you could boot up to system 6 of the MacOS. The Lisa had an entirely business approach and an operating system to cope, meaning that there are no (to my knowledge) games for this system. This emulator is meant for nostalgia purposes only, it would …

E-Maculation is dedicated to emulation of the classic Macintosh computer in Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. This is possible through the use of emulators such as SheepShaver, Basilisk II, Mini vMac and PearPC.

How-To

What is it?

The acronym ROM stands for Read-Only Memory. It is a small amount of memory inside the computer which is programmed to contain a special program when the computer was manufactured. It cannot usually be changed. The special program is started whenever the Mac is started. It is the program which tests the computer, displays a happy or sad Mac icon. It checks if there is a disk from which the computer can be started, and if so then it starts the MacOS from that disk.

Brief introduction to Mac emulators and their history

A few months ago I wrote a big post on another forum for a guy who wanted to know about what the best mac emulators were. I decided to post that message here on the forum for anyone who wants to read it. It is a simple introduction to each emulator and a small bit of history, and a few links. Hope it is of use to someone. You can view on the Emaculation forums here: http://www.emaculation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=21489.

New poll!

The “best letter” poll was getting ridiculously popular, so I closed it down with “z” beating “a” by a margin of 159 votes to 153 votes. I also shut down the “best local website” poll, with The Jenny Girl winning by a fair margin.

Could anyone shed any light on the legality of this SheepShaver distribution, which contains the Mac OS and the MacOS ROM Update? http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32391?

This has been discussed a bit in the forum. The MacOS and ROMs are the ones avaliable from Apple's website, but the fact that it is available for download as one package, and the description of it on VersionTracker (SheepShaver 1.0) is a little controversial. It is a very good idea having it all as one package…

We do seem to attract the hackers on this site. Is this like the 4th time the site has been hacked? Well, someone made alot of our PHP pages unreadable by replacing the page with an image. This was a simple line of code in the database which merely needed deleting and took about 30 seconds after I realised what to do. Maybe these hackers don't really know how to cause much havock? Anyway, it seems to be back to normal now.

Mini vMac emulates an old Mac Plus on modern systems, including Windows. Setting it up is very easy.

I missed this one when it happened, but if you click over to the official MESS page you can find a new version of that software, which was released on October 31. Our forum has just been updated. We've finally moved up to phpBB version 3 (years late). we've upgraded, but we have maintained the look and feel of our old (very custom) forum style. This took a lot of work... but the results really paid off. If you visit the forum you will find a forum that looks just like what you're used to seeing here at E-Maculation... but that actually operates quite a bit better than what you are used to.
Installing MacOS on SheepShaver using a restore disk

This was posted on the forum last year and I thought it was worth mentioning here.

This topic has two methods of installing Mac OS in SheepShaver using a restore disk or a system specific install disk (the kind that come with a Macintosh computer). These disks can normally only be used on one machine (e.g. a G4 Cube restore disk can only be used on a G4 Cube, and not on anything else)

Introduction

PearPC emulates a PPC Macintosh (G3 or G4) capable of booting Mac OS X versions 10.1 to 10.4 (Tiger).

Setting up the emulator is fun and easy! But before you begin installing, there are a few things that you need to assemble:

What follows is a run-down of free software for Mac OS 8 and 9 that has been tested to work in SheepShaver.

Productivity

There aren't a whole lot of free word processing options available for classic Mac users. The best commercial option is probably LightWayText 4.17 (homepage). It's a full featured word processor from Japan (translated into English) that runs in every OS going back to System 7. Still updated and supported, the full version costs twenty-five bucks.

Hi. My name is Stephen. I have been a member at E-Maculation for a couple of years now. I am also the moderator of the Networking forum on E-Maculation. Due to ClockWise going to Korea, and Mac Emu leaving for a while, and everyone else miraculously dissapearing, I have been promoted to News Poster, so I will be here to post all the latest developments on all the mac emulators. I have also noticed that the forums have been a bit quiet. Please feel free to come and join, even …

Forum is Back

I finally got the forum database fixed! (I told you I would didn’t I?)

The problem with the database occured when I tried to export it. There were lots of characters in the database that wern’t escaped properly, and I had to go through it and manually fix each one. Due to the size of the database it was very difficult to locate each of the errors, so i had to fix the ones I knew about, then upload the database, then attempt to restore it. I would then be told where the next error…

Jim “slim” Watters has updated his “Macintosh Emulation Power Pack.” You can find the package - a collection of helpful emulators and utilities - over here. The best part of the pack is the collection of Basilisk II builds for every purpose (for example, build 94 from years and years ago is the last version to support classic emulation, while JIT release 3 which is also quite old might be faster than the current release).

Setting up SoftMac is fun and easy! But there are a few things that you will need to pull together before you begin:

Introduction

SheepShaver emulates a Macintosh computer capable of running Mac OS version 9.0.4 and earlier.

This guide is a work-in-progress, but it should walk you through the basic set-up of SheepShaver in Linux.

Parts of this guide are adapted from Ronald P. Regensburg's SheepShaver for Mac OS X setup guide.

Description

If you are a Mini vMac user, you may wish to explore the use of WORM. WORM emulates a Mac Plus. WORM was created by the author of SoftMac to sort of “show up” the vMac team. The only downside to this emulator is that it does not support sound, and is no longer updated or distributed by its creator (check below for a download link). For most users, Mini vMac is a better choice.
