Hi,

I assume you created an empty hard disk file to install Mac OS 9 on?
If so, the disk is recognized by the Mac OS installer as an empty(not formatted)disk and you should initialise the disk. The Mac OS installer will then start.

A install CD that is supplied with a new Mac (like the "cd imac install cd from an older imac" you used) can only be used with the model it was supplied with, not on any other model and thus also not on the virtual Mac that SheepShaver creates. "This computer" in the error message is the SheepShaver virtual PPC Mac. You need a generic retail MacOS CD, version 8.5, 8.6, 9.0 or 9.0.4 for use with SheepShaver.

Hi,

To use networking, you need to use the SheepShaver GUI and set networking to "slirp"

In Mac OS 8.5 set TCP/IP to automatically receive a IP address.
Save the configuration and networking should work...

do you know any place for downloading 9.0.4 I´ve been trying to use the one I have with imac using tomeviewer and decompressing all but after all what should I do. I`ve created a disk image with imac installer and put decompressed files into this. After that recorded a cd. However sheepshaver can`t start from this cd. Any suggestion?

Maybe the hack described here:
http://www.emaculation.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=3119
will work with your iMac 9.0.4 CD.

"slirp" ethernet works for me with DHCP in MacOS9 but not in MacOS8.5/8.6 either (and not with 7.5.5 in BasiliskII).

With slirp ethernet enabled, try setting the addresses manually in TCP/IP control panel (works for me):
IP Address: 10.0.2.15
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 10.0.2.2
Name Server: 10.0.2.3

What do you mean with "can´ see documents copied via unix disk or created in other macs"? Do files copied to the "Unix" disk not show up in the shared folder or do files copied to the shared folder not show up on the "Unix" disk? Can't you see them in the Finder or can't you see them in a "Open" dialog?

On MacOSX you need software like Toast to create a .iso image. Maybe it can be done also in Terminal, I don't know (my Unix knowledge is minimal).

Why don't you try and find a original 9.0 or 9.0.4 CD? Is sometimes offered on sites like eBay and is sold on a site like "Apple Rescue":

files copied to the "Unix" disk not show up in the shared folder. I can see icon but the forks has been lost. So use resedit so as to change file type. Then open.
I´m using mac os 8.5 thats why I suppose appletalk doesn`t work

Using the "Unix" disk/shared folder for file transfers you will indeed loose specific Mac properties like Type/Creator and resource fork.

If you need to transfer files from MacOSX to MacOS and back with those properties intact, you can:

1. Add a second disk image as "disk" to SheepShaver. Make sure the disk to boot from (the MacOS disk) is on top in the list. If you make the image a .dmg image (created with Disk Utility) you can also mount it in MacOSX. Do not mount the image at the same time in MacOSX and in SheepShaver: Mount the image in MacOSX, copy the files, unmount the image, start Sheepshaver, copy the files, shut down SheepShaver, mount the image, copy the files, etc.

2. Or encode files to be transferred via "Unix" disk/shared folder into a format that survives transfer through non-HFS file systems, like for instance binhex, and decode at the other end.

IP networking through ethernet should work. I do not know whether AppleTalk networking will work at all with SheepShaver.

Installed Sheepshaver on an Intel iMac with some initial difficulty using a memory stick and the Unix disk. When I put some Mac items on them and started SS, it changed their icons and made them inoperable. The Unix format apparently made the files look like Unix executable files instead of Mac files. Solved by burning CDs with information right from the other OS 9 machine.

Here's where I get really confused: The entire reason that I'm in need of SS is to run an old customize 4AD JIT server program. It can access the computer via TCP or another protocol that starts with an A (not AppleTalk). However, I believe Apple Talk has to be working and Open Transport. I am running 8.6 and the other actual PPC macs using this server and its software are running OS 9. However, I do have internet access, but no IP address shows up in the TCP/IP control panel. Using IE, I can access the internet but the server does not show up.

I just read that SLIRP (the ethernet adapter protocol in SS) does NOT support AppleTalk and that "...your computer can access the Internet, but others on the Internet cannot normally access your computer." I don't think this would apply to LAN computers like the server, however. I've also read that SS is not network compatible at all (love the authority with which some sites will sling BS!).

Does anyone know if this is a matter of OS upgrade? I am at 8.6 now. Would 9.0.4 work better? Any help would be REALLY appreciated!

The "Unix" shared folder/disk will indeed damage Mac-specific file properties. You can use additional disk images to move files, mounting them alternately in MacOSX and MacOS (mounting at the same time in MacOS and MacOSX may cause corruption of the image directory content). Or you can encode files, encoded files (remember binhex?) will survive transport via the "Unix" shared folder/disk.

This is confusing. You can access internet from the virtual 8.6 Mac while there is no IP address in the TCP/IP control panel? When you open TCP/IP control panel after accessing the internet with IE you will probably see the addresses that are obtained using DHCP. TCP/IP control panel is part of Open Transport, it is Open Transport that is being used.
Note that these IP addresses are not addresses that belong to your LAN. With slirp networking your virtual Mac is not on your LAN directly, but connected to it through a TCP/IP subnet. That is why you can use TCP/IP networking and also AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) over IP, but not AppleTalk between the virtual Mac and devices connected to your LAN.

The server on your virtual Mac is not directly connected to your LAN.

Hm, may have been a comment about an earlier version of SS?

I don't think 9.0.4 will make a difference in this respect.

I understand that it is possible to have MacOS on SheepShaver for Windows connect directly to your LAN using the Basilisk ethernet driver. You could try installing Windows XP on your Intel iMac using Boot Camp and then use SheepShaver for Windows. However, in your case it seems to me more appropriate to use one of your OS 9 PPC machines to run the server.

Maybe it is time to try and find a different server solution? Eventually you will need to anyway.

Thanks so much! You cleared up quite a bit for me, but I am curious about something: Can I use the Basilisk ethernet driver with the Intel Mac setup and would that give me the connectivity I need? The server gives ASDL? and TCP for choices to connect. I keep thinking that their MUST be a way to get this to work, at least in the short term.

I am but a lowly IT director trying to make my case to the administration, who is intent on saving money, even if it means losing money in the long term. They are aware of the need, but will not spend the cash at the moment. They are using junk PCs to access online management software that ONLY works in IE 6 on PC (no virtual PC) and first/second gen. iMacs to access the in-house management server software. I have gotten the network upgraded and the top 2 in command new iMacs and MacBook Pros, but nothing is rolling downhill.

Now, can I use SheepShaver under Windows XP Pro even if it is running via Parallels? I know that that question is way out there and the newness of Parallels kind of orphans that question, but maybe someone, somewhere has had experience. I am quietly praying to Jah that he will grant me favors.
Thanks,
Jeff

Only in Windows, not in MacOSX.

Trying is the only way to know for certain.

Quote:

Probably, but I do not know if the networking will be what you need. I would bet on Boot Camp rather than Parallels for trying this with Windows XP.

I don't understand why you are trying to use a Intel iMac when apparently still older iMacs with MacOS are available that can do the job. Running a server in emulation is definitively not a good idea. In the circumstances you describe, it would have been wiser to buy a second hand PPC Mac to run the server than a new Intel iMac. But eventually you cannot go on like that. Within a couple of years everything should have been moved onto new software to work with todays computers. Didn't the company reserve funds for that?

And don't be be surprised when in a next MacOSX version Apple will abandon AppleTalk altogether. With the release of MacOS 8.6 and of AppleShare IP, now nearly 10 years ago, it became clear that Apple was moving towards IP sharing and that AppleTalk support would eventually come to an end.

SheepShaver is nice as it is, for fun, for nostalgic reasons, for accessing old files that can only be used with software that was discontinued a long time ago, for playing old games that one cannot part with, but SheepShaver is not for running serious software on a company's network, anyway not in its present state.

Thanks, Ron, I so appreciate your time. I need to clarify some things that I didn't express correctly:

1) I am NOT running the SERVER in emulation. I am using a Gigabit Ethernet Power Mac G4 with 9.2.2 as the server.

2)What I am trying to do is to simplify the steps that the end user is taking. She's the second in command and usually had an old iMac AND an eMachines junk heap on her desk, creating a space problem and time-consuming tasks to switch back and forth all day. The intel iMac seemed like the answer while we look into up-to-date server software.

One last thing: What is involved in installing Sheepshaver on a PC? No, I don't want you to go through it with me, just point me to a decent site for that. Is it similar to the OS X setup?

Thanks again. You've really gone above and beyond on this one!
Jeff
