Camera, Snow Leopard and SheepShaver

Post by accessipd »

Hi I have tried to load OS 8.5 and 9.0 on Sheep Shaver, both as a disk image and on a CD;, every time I get the flashing ? - When I look in the console it is giving this error:
Error(magicammac.cc:276): MagicCam 0: MagicCamOpen: Not an allowed process!

Do I need to turn off the camera? How?

You probably have additional software installed for video chat or similar. Is that right? I doubt, however, that the MagicCam error is directly related to not being able to startup from these startup volumes.

Probably the volumes do not have a bootable system on them. Where did you get them and/or how were they created? To install MacOS in SheepShaver, you need to have a general retail system install CD or a disk image created from such a install CD.

Thanks Ronald.

Hmmmm

I don't have any fancy chat stuff loaded. I thought it my be some open source 3D apps I recently loaded, but I took them out, and got the same issue.

Here is the full console report from when I open SheepShaver and before it spits out the disk:

Yes! that does help, thanks!

That problem is now fixed. But now I have a QuickDraw problem. it seems:

That is a warning about using QuicDraw because it may not be supported in future MacOSX versions. It is always shown in Console when running this version of SheepShaver and it does not affect normal functioning of SheepShaver in any way.

I still think that the MagicCam error was not related to SheepShaver not booting from the CD either.

You did not answer the questions I put above about the CDs you are trying to boot from. Again:

Probably the volumes do not have a bootable system on them. Where did you get them and/or how were they created? To install MacOS in SheepShaver, you need to have a general retail system install CD or a disk image created from such a install CD.

I have an OS 9 install disk from a Black pre-OS X G3. But it's not working.
I think I'm going to have to either upgrade my software or get used to open source.

Thanks anyway.

1. You will need a general retail system install CD, not one that was provided with a new Mac. And it should not be a MacOS version later than 9.0.4.

2. Have there been G3 Macs that were sold with MacOS9 installed? I didn't know. As far as I know, no G3 was sold with newer than 8.6 installed.

Definitelly OS 9 on this Mac. I threw the machine away because the motherboard fried, but the OS it shipped with was 9.0.2
I think it was called a PowerBook, it has a see through copper-looking keyboard, and it supported some of the earlier versions of OS X, though I never loaded os X.

It was the machine just before the 1st white MacBook.

Are you saying that I need to buy another version of OS 9?

For installing a system in SheepShaver, you will need a general retail system install CD. For MacOS9 CDs you can usually tell by the label. A retail MacOS9 install CD has a white label with a large yellow 9 on it. A install CD that came with a new machine usually has a grey label.

(The PowerBook probably was the "PowerBook (Firewire)", also known as "Pismo". It does indeed have a PowerPC 750 (G3) processor, but it is the only G3 PowerBook that does not have "G3" in it's name. And it came indeed with MacOS 9.0.2.)

And the CD cover is a dark grey not white with the big 9. Darn!
I'm not going to go and buy a new OS just for this. What a pity.

Do you know of any other options I may have to run OS9 apps in Snow Leopard?

Thanks for the help!

Through some file exchange communities on the internet you can find (illegal) downloads of install CD disk images.

When using the ROM from the install disk, it should work.
Worked fine for me
