Power Mac G3 Rom not working

Post by Ambassador »

Trying to use Sheepshaver on Mac OS X and Windows with a Power Mac G3 rom results in the emulator starting and closing with emulator "screen" black the whole time. The versions used was the latest unstable version on OS X and the latest stable version on Windows. The Windows version had error outputs, which I have included in this post.

What is the problem?

The Windows version and the MacOSX version both behave the same way, opening a black window and quitting? The ROM file may be not compatible. What else, besides the ROM file, is the same in both setups? A boot disk/volume/image?

Both setups had default settings, and no boot disk/volume/image was used (it should have just given the question-mark floppy disk icon?).

If it does not find a ROM file, SheepShaver will quit before it can open a window, if it finds a ROM file, you will see the blinking question mark. Probably the used ROM file is not compatible.

Google for: redundant robot sheepshaver
There you will find compatible ROM files. For 7.5.3 through 8.1 you will need the Old World ROM, for 8.5 through 9.0.4 the New World ROM may be better.

Ok. Is the G3 rom useful for anything?

First try a different rom to be sure the G3 rom is the problem. If SheepShaver works with a different rom file, your G3 rom apparently cannot be used with SheepShaver. I do not know whether it is, or will be, useful for other purposes.

Is your G3 a beige G3 or a blue & white G3? SS doesn't support B&W G3 roms.

Even the Beige G3 has 3 revisions on the logic board.
Which ROM dumping utility and OS do you use on that G3? I don't know what will happen if you use a ROM dumping utility on a Mac OS ROM-enabled Mac OS (8.5 or later).

I used ROM Grabber as recommend here. I believe it was Mac OS 9.

Ok, so do you recommend I boot to Mac OS 8.0/8.1 and try again?
