OS 8.6 Crashing

Post by ..::| Dave89 |::.. »

I have managed to run OS 8.6 in SheepShaver on Windows Vista (running in Windows 2000 compatibility mode), but every time I launch PictureViewer, the whole thing crashes, and I'm taken back to Windows. I was wondering whether anyone here knew of the cause of this, and a solution?

Also I want to use the internet, how do I do this? The computer I'm running SheepShaver on is networked via Wi-Fi, if that makes any difference.

TIA

Ignore the question about the internet connection. I fiddled around and got it running in Netscape (I hate Internet Explorer, and plus it kept crashing).

Not sure what could cause that. But there are a number of references in the forum to PictureViewer not loading pictures correctly.

What version/build of SheepShaver are you using? If you are using the old build from the official site, try the newer build stickied in this forum. Or vice versa.

I'll try to use PictureViewer myself tomorrow morning and report back here with my results.

(also, welcome to the forum, dave89)

Did you install a different version of QuickTime than the version that came with 8.6?

ClockWise - I'm using version 2.3-Pre (May 14 2006)

Ronald - No, I haven't installed anything on OS 8 except for some old copies of Stuffit Expander and Claris works I used to use on System 6. I'm have trouble finding good software, maybe I'm not looking hard enough :)

I asked that because QuickTime versions later than 4.1.2 will cause problems, they would work fine on real hardware Macs, but not in SheepShaver.

I can't load Quicktime at all, I get a system error saying "MoviePlayer" error type 10, then SheepShaver locks up.

I installed Quicktime 4.0.3, meant for 68k Macs, works great.

Internet Explorer keeps crashing the emulator when trying to load a page. What can I do to fix this? Outlook did the same thing.

Also Netscape Navigator 7 crashes the whole thing occasionally, as did Photoshop 6 when I tried to install it. Is there anything I can do to stop these crashes? It's really annoying me. I had the same problem with Basilisk II, when I was using System 7.5.5.

Yup, PictureViewer appears to freeze up SheepShaver for me also, when using OS 8.6.

It works fine in OS 9. So there's a solution.

Internet and networking is really bad in SheepShaver. It crashes a lot. Using the Ethernet driver method will probably give you more stability:

I'm not sure how to set the ethernet drivers up in Vista.

Switch between SLIRP and the Router options and see what works best.

For browsing, iCab is the only real choice. Netscape and IE crash a lot.

I've installed some applications I no longer want (A-Dock & Kaleidoscope), how do I remove them?

Drag the program into the trash. Empty the trash.

Mac OS is not complicated like Windows. :)

Also: if you re-run the application's installer, it usually has a "remove" option.

iCab crashed the emulator as soon as I started it up. And the internet does not work at all when I change the setting to router.

Yeah. SheepShaver for Windows is very, very crashy when it comes to networking.

Meanwhile, you cannot just change the setting to router. You have to go and set it up within the Mac OS. You can adapt the Basilisk II guide fort that purpose:

http://emaculation.com/doku.php/basilis ... line_guide

But yeah, it will still be very crashy.

Basilisk II is very stable, however. Maybe your applications can be used with that?

Is there any reason to think that the Mac version of SheepShaver would be more stable? I'm intending to switch to Mac OS X Leopard next month.

Basilisk II was just as bad, if not worse.

I think the OS X version is more stable. It has seen a lot more active development.

But I haven't used it.

In my experience, and is the experience of many others, networking in Basilisk II is very solid. Maybe try again and post here with some specifics. Maybe we can sort it out for you.

Basilisk II won't even start up for me. I used to use a version that required installion, but it was unstable. I can just wait until I get my mac mini, there's nothing too important I need to do in OS 8.6.

If you decide to try again, these instructions should help you out:

(8.6 doesn't work in Basilisk)

It was a corrupt ROM preventing Basilisk II from starting. I'm in now to figure out how to get online

I have reinstalled System 7.5.5, but Basilisk is being a major PITA. Sometimes it'll load, most times it'll hang there on a black screen. What can I do to stop that?

How do I make the menus stay open on there own so I don't have to keep the mouse button pressed?

That is how menus work in System 7.x.x. "Sticky menus" were introduced in MacOS8. I vaguely remember that there were utilities that could make the menus "stick", but I do not remember names.
