SheepShaver UB build for Mac OS X 25-10-2009

Post by kingfisher500 »

I have installed OS 9.0.4 under this build. I had one successful startup after that. Then nothing but crashes on startup.

The console shows the following:

11/16/09 10:34:23 AM SheepShaver[409] Warning once: This application, or a library it uses, is using NSQuickDrawView, which has been deprecated. Apps should cease use of QuickDraw and move to Quartz.

Please also provide information about your host system (PPC or Intel, MacOSX version) and whether you made changes to the installed MaOS 9.0.4 during the first successful run, like installing software or changing setting in control panels. This kind of information may help to find the cause of this particular problem that is reported by a few other users.

A possible solution for now: Check "Ignore Illegal Memory Accesses" in the Miscellaneous tab in SheepShaver preferences. While you cannot properly start SheepShaver, you can use the stand-alone prefs editor to do that: http://www.xs4all.nl/~ronaldpr/sheepsha ... rPrefs.zip

SheepShaver UB build for Mac OS X 25-10-2009

Post by kingfisher500 »

I have just started OS 9.0.4 under SheepShaver successfully two times. I have no idea why it worked these times. I am running Snow Leopard, 10.6.2.

Here is the console message:

Apparently the problem is not permanent. Did you do anything special in between, like restarting your Mac?

I tried to start SheepShaver just now and it crashed again. Same console message as with the prior crashes.

I install and run a program after the first start up--FoxBase+Mac. It was in order to run this program that I installed SheepShaver and OS 9.0.4.

I did restart between the initial crash and the successful start up. I restarted intentionally and tried to start SheepShaver, but it crashed repeatedly.

I may or may not have done another restart before to eventual successful start up.

Now it is crashing on start up again. I just had two successive crashes immediately after the Welcome screen appeared. And then it started successfully on the third attempt, when it took a break from writing this reply.

No restart involved this time.

Did you try checking "Ignore Illegal Memory Accesses" (see above).

I'm running 10.6.1 & it won't open, it just bounces in the dock for a second & then vanishes. If I try opening it with Rosetta, it "opens" but, I get the spinning beachball if I click the icon in the Dock. Getting the same problem that I was getting with the newest build of Basilisk II.

Better do not try opening in Rosetta, the Intel version runs better than the PPC version.

Is this a first setup on a fresh system or is this an existing setup on a system that was upgraded to Snow Leopard or a setup that was migrated from another machine?

If this is a first setup: Are you sure you have a compatible rom file with the correct name installed?

SheepShaver UB build for Mac OS X 25-10-2009 Startup Crash

Post by kingfisher500 »

I had missed the part of your message about the stand alone prefs app, and checking "Ignore Illegal Memory Access." I have done that now. First startup after doing so was fine.

Ill see how it goes.

Thanks for your help.

Did you follow the instructions in the manual? Did you install a compatible rom file in the SheepShaver folder and made sure it is named "Mac OS ROM"?

(Without the rom file, SheepShaver will not launch.)

Need help with setting up SheepShaver on iMac

Post by spmandel »

Hi
I'm a bit of a novice. I have an iMac with OS 10.5.6. I used to have a PPC G4 which crashed two months ago. I am desperately looking for a way to run an outdated OS 9 application on the new iMac.

Here's my problem: Where do I find the compatable Mac OS ROM? I tried searching on my original Panther installation disks (10.3). I still have the 10.2 software that came with the G4 too. I have a back up external HD but it doesn't have any of the exe files on it.

Thanks,
Susan

Do a Google search for "redundant robot sheepshaver"

The first result is a guide that has some ROMs.

I had the same problem as others.
The solution was (again) to disable loading of extensions during boot time, by pressing SHIFT key and then manually edit which extensions to load from the "Extensions Manager".

I've found that the extension that really refuses to load and crashes all the time is
SOMobjects for Mac OS

Some QuickTime plugins might crash too, but not all the time, and if they crash, on the next "boot" they usually load OK.

Hm, interesting. I never had problems with SOMobjects™ for Mac OS. It is part of the default system installation and it is a shared library, it must be another process that uses that library that causes the actual crash. SOMobjects™ for Mac OS is needed for contextual menus to work.

Help!!

Post by jkouzes »

I am a newbi Mac user, from the Windows XP/Vista world. A freiend of mine gave me allot of old Mac programs that go really far back... Since I don't have "classic mode" on a Intel Mac Pro Mas OX, with Snow Leopard, I don't have any of the old OSs to use with these emulator. I did find some roms for each of them, I thin I have a one for Macos9.rom.

Antways, I follow your tutorial posted here, but, I can't get past the "?" mark in the little disk window..... So I am stumped.

The fact that you see the blinking "?" means that you have a compatible rom file, otherwise SheepShaver would not run at all. You write that you do not have "any of the old OSs to use with these emulator". You need a MacOS install disk to boot from and to install the system on the created disk image. Without a OS, a computer does nothing and that is also true for a emulated computer. Does your friend not have old system CDs as well as the old programs he gave you?

(If you have an oldworld rom file, SheepShaver can run System 7.5.3 that can be downloaded from Apple. The installation is a little more complex than with using a system instal CD. In any case you will need a startup volume for SheepShaver.)

You do need a system install CD with a compatible system (or a disk image created from such a CD). If you search the internet, you may still find such CDs for sale. Make sure you buy a generic retail system CD, not one that was provided with a new Mac.

Alternatively, you can search file exchange communities (like torrent) where disk images of system install CDs are offered (illegally).

I just downloaded SheepShaver, and before I can even attempt to get started, the program refuses to start up - I click open, and it flashes briefly on the Dock before disappearing again.
I had briefly experimented with a previous version of SheepShaver (2.3), and had set preferences although I hadn't got it working.
I'm using 10.5.8 on a 2.4GHz Intel MacBook Pro.

From the manual: "If SheepShaver does not find a compatible ROM file, it will immediately quit on launch."

Did you study the manual and did you install a compatible ROM file?

Edit: You may have an old prefs file that prevents proper setup. Use the "Delete Prefs File" script to delete the prefs file and start again, following the manual.

I've reread the manual, and still can't find much that's relevant beyond the passage you quoted - but I have my .rom file (Mac OSX 8.6) in the same folder, and that appears to be about all I can do for now, as I can't access any in-program options to locate it as the program doesn't get that far after opening it.
I did Delete the Prefs as you suggested, but it doesn't appear to have made a difference that I can yet see.
Thanks for the help thus far, though!

As far as I know, the rom file from a MacOS 8.6 system disk is not compatible with SheepShaver for MacOSX. Anyway, the file should be named (or renamed to) "Mac OS ROM" (without the quotation marks and with no extension!), as described in the manual.

If you cannot launch SheepShaver with the correctly named rom file in the same folder with SheepShaver, you will need to find a compatible rom file. You may find a compatible newworld rom file when you Google for: "redundant robot sheepshaver" (without the quotation marks).

Ah, it just isn't compatible. I had renamed it thusly, but I suppose that wasn't the problem to begin with. Thanks for the help!

EDIT: I followed the manual's instructions, but the floppy-with-question mark continues to appear, despite (I had thought) following each step accurately, to the point at which initialization is meant to be offered. This doesn't occur, however, as the disk error image remains.

How can you follow the steps until the point where initialization is meant to be offered when you still see the floppy with blinking question mark? You will never come near that point.

I suppose you entered all the settings in preferences as described in the manual. Then, as descibed in the manual:

- Save the settings by clicking "Save"
- Quit SheepShaver by pressing control-escape
- Insert and mount the system install CD in MacOSX
- Launch again SheepShaver

If all settings are correct and if the CD is indeed a normal bootable system install CD for a MacOS version 8.5 through 9.0.4, SheepShaver should startup from the CD and you should not see the question mark.
