Hi,
Have an original retail 9.0.4 cd, pulled a ROM disc as described on the instructions. Unzip SheepShaver_UB_20101106 then I get as far as launching Sheepshaver, get floppy disc icon, open preferences and do all the set up stuff (path to ROM, etc etc). However, when I click Save, the box dismisses, then after a few seconds I get the spinning wheel of death, then Sheepshaver quits unexpectedly. After this, Sheepshaver fails to relaunch, ie I doubleclick, it flashes open and closes instantly. I can only rescue it by zapping preference and pram

Am running 10.5.8 on a dual 1.8 Ghz, PPC G5 (2 GB Ram). Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Many thanks

Jon Sayers

Apparently something went wrong while saving the preferences file. Cannot imagine how or why. Did you follow the setup guide? Have you tried configuring SheepShaver again after deleting prefs and nvram files?

Hi,
Thanks for a quick reply. I followed (as far as I can tell) what was in http://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/she ... os_x_setup
but I just keep getting to the same stage, i.e. after setting the preferences as suggested and hitting save it crashes a few seconds later.

I can get it to launch again but only by running the two scripts (Delete Prefs and Zap PRAM- is this the same as deleting the nvram?), but consistently hit the same problem. Cheers, Jon

Strange, I have never seen a report like this.

Let us see if a prefs file is created and if so, what its contents are.

After deleting both files (yes, "Zap PRAM" will delete the .sheepshaver_nvram file), follow the setup procedure as described in the guide. After saving the prefs and after SheepShaver has crashed, open Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities/) and type:
Code:
open .sheepshaver_prefs

followed by a return (and do not forget the leading dot in the name).

If the file exists, it will open in TextEdit. Copy all content and paste it here.

Thanks for you reply. I followed your instructions. As yesterday it crashed once I'd saved the new preferences. But it does appear to have written a preference file. Here is the contents as copied out of Terminal:

Apparently your shared folder is on a different volume. Is there anything special or unusual about that "Work" volume? What kind of volume is it?

You could try to set up SheepShaver first with a shared folder somewhere in your Home folder, for instance on your desktop. If that works, than the problem is caused by something about your "Work" volume.

(I also notice that you have set the window size to 640/480, a rather small screen size for MacOS 9.)

Hi Ron,

I tried all the things you suggested but seemed to get the same problem, so then I just started SS, and simultaneously held down the ctrl and esc keys, and then it worked!

I had tried that before but it didn't work until I followed you notes about keeping it all one one disc.

Many thanks, OS9 installed fine.
Cheers, Jon
