hi folks,

after a bit of hassle i got SheepShaver up and running using sheepshaver_2.3-3-cvs-20110905_i386.deb (http://emaculation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6553) on my Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit machine following the instructions in this forum.

I need it to run a software called MacDiff (http://www.geol-pal.uni-frankfurt.de/Staff/Homepages/Petschick/MacDiff/MacDiffInfoE.html) to analyse some geologic samples. The program is running fine on an image of OS 9 and one of 9.0.4. But for proper analysis I need to install an additional database that comes with the package of MacDiff.

Unfortunately when I try to install it I always get the same error which terminates the installation process:

Sorry, but a disk related error (-43) has occurred.

Does anybody have a solution to this problem?

Cheers,
Ralf

Is the installer complete? Where do you run the installer and where to do you try to install? (where = which volume, which location)

Error -43 is "fnfErr" (File not found; Folder not found; Edition container not found; Target not found)

Hi,

Installing the database works perfectly in system 8.6. 9.0.4 gave me a crash right at the end of the database installation.

Best,

sorry for the delayed answer.

I just tried OS 8.6 which didn't resolve the issue. Error -43 is still being shown when I try to install the database.

I run the installer from my MacOS volume in SheepShaver which i created with SheepShaver itself (size 2 GiB, assorted RAM for MacOS is 1 GiB) and i want to install it just there. The database seems to be a self-extracting file as it opens Stuffit as far as i can see.

This does not seem right. A self-extracting archive does not use Stuffit and judging by the file's icon and name it is a installer rather than an archive that needs Stuffit to expand. So why does trying to install the database launch Stuffit Expander?

But if it is a Stuffit archive in disguise, and if no destination for the expanded file is asked for, have you checked the destination settings in Stuffit Expander preferences?

You are right, I just checked it. It is indeed an installer, the only thing that confused me was some split-screen saying something about Aladdin Systems.

In the meantime I tried starting SheepShaver as root in order to check if that would make any difference at all. But it did not.

Do you have any other suggestions to solve the problem at hand? Are there some additional facts about my hardware/software that might be useful?

Hi,

The installer was made with Aladdin Stuff-it installer maker. That's why you see the stuff-it window.
You might try to re-download the complete package?

I did that already without result. Right now I am trying to implement that database manually into MacDiff with the version i just got from the developer. I'll post my experience.

Thanks for your advises so far

Hi,

The database installer creates a folder MacDiff in the System Folder/Preferences folder.

Thanks for the tip and the upload.

I was finally able to get it to work, even with the installer of the database. The fault was my own, as i used burned images of MacOS from cd/dvd which are by nature read-only. So the error -43 made sense as no MacDiff-folder was created in System Folder:Preferences when i installed MacDiff.

Now, by using a .dsk-image of MacOS mounted (read/write-access) from my harddrive, it works like a charm. Could have been so easy from the beginning.

Many thanks for the help. Much appreciated!
