No sound in SheepShaver for Windows (everything downloaded)

Post by followyourheart89 »

Hi! Sorry in advance if this is confusing (1: I'm a total newbie when it comes to emulators, 2: English is not my native language (it's Swedish, if anyone's interested), 3: I don't know how to upload screenshots). I'll try to provide as much information as I can.

I have successfully downloaded and started up SheepShaver for Windows. I had no "legal" ROMs or discs, so I downloaded everything - or so I thought. This is what I have and where I got it (I may have forgotten to list something, so bear with me):

SheepShaver itself: http://www.emaculation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5325
Boot disc (Disc Tools 8.5): http://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/sheepshaver_setup
System 7.0: http://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/basilisk_ii_setup
System 7.5.5: http://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/basilisk_ii_setup
The ROM file and OS9: http://www.redundantrobot.com/sheepshav ... nt-page-1/
+ One random disc I made in HFVExplorer using tutorials on http://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/sheepshaver_setup and http://www.redundantrobot.com/sheepshav ... nt-page-1/. It doesn't do anything, but I don't dare removing it from SheepShaverGUI because I'm afraid of screwing things up (told you I'm a newbie!), so it's still there. Can't see anywhere how much memory it has though, what if it eats up all memory...

I also have a couple of games and programs (Mah Jong Parlour, StuffIt Expander 5.5) as separate discs, got them from Macintosh Garden. I successfully unstuffed Space Camel, Super Maze Wars and Spin Doctor, sooo nostalgic!

Only problem is... There's no sound! I don't know how to upload a screenshot here, so I'll try to describe what it looks like in Control Panels: Sound.

Under "Output" (there are "Alert Sounds", "Input" and "Output"), the only device available is "Built-in". If I attempt to adjust the volume underneath, it just jumps back to max if I try to turn the volume down, and the screen flashes in a way too familiar fashion... it looks exactly like when I entered mute mode in my old Mac G4 OS 9. How does that even happen?!

What did I do wrong? Is it impossible to get sound by using downloaded stuff (I mean, do you need a legal disc?) or have I just missed something? I have learnt how to create discs in HFVExplorer and how to put stuff in them, and it wouldn't surprise me if you need to create a disc with like a gazillion different files and figure out exactly where to put everything, and I wouldn't get it right because I'm too much of a newbie.

To enable sound, you need to select "Built-in" (click it to highlight it), even when it is the only available option in Sound control panel.

(The volume cannot be adjusted in SheepShaver, you need to adjust it in the host system.)

I have selected "Built-in", just like you said, but there's still no sound.

There's also this box "Play sound through output device" under "Input", but I can't tick the box. I also can't tick the "Mute" box under "Output". I must have done something wrong when setting this up if I can't even tick boxes. :???:

(The host system... that's my own PC, right? This is embarassing  )

1. If the Sound control panel looks like this, with "Built-in" highlighted, sound should work (provided there are no other issues in your setup) .

2. SheepShaver does not fully emulate all of an actual hardware Mac, so some things do not work. In Sound control panel you can choose an alert sound and set its relative volume and you can select "Built-in" for the Output device. All other settings in Sound are non-functional in SheepShaver.

3. Yes, your PC is the host machine and your Windows system is the host system.

Thanks for the screenshot, it matches my SheepShaver control panel exactly!
And I follow all those steps, and there's still no sound. Weird. There must be some issue with my setup, because there's nothing wrong with the sound on my Windows.

Does it have anything to do with the ROM file? It's the only explanation I can come up with, because I don't think I did anything else wrong. I mean, the rest of the files must be the same for everybody who downloaded SheepShaver, right? There were a couple of ROM files to choose between at http://www.redundantrobot.com/sheepshav ... nt-page-1/.

Both "old world" and "new world" rom should work. Most SheepShaver users use either one depending on the MacOS version they use in SheepShaver.

In your first post you list a number of files you downloaded, in fact more than you would need. Exactly which MacOS version do you run in SheepShaver and which tutorial did you follow to set it up?

Maybe you can post here the contents of your prefs file. In your SheepShaver folder you will find a file named SheepShaver_prefs. Open it with Notepad, select the content and copy/paste that in your reply.

Hi,

There is something very funny going on here. With your current sheepshaver_prefs, sheepshaver should not be able to run, or only show a blinking question mark. Did your start all over again? Or do you have sheepshaver installed in two folders?

Assuming you have the downloads from redundantrobot in the same folder as your SheepShaver program, and you have not changed the names of the files, you can add the following lines to your prefs. Please use notepad.exe to add:

disk os9.img
rom newworld86.rom
screen win/800/600

and change the following lines:
ramsize 134217728
ignoresegv true
ignoreillegal true

Save the file and try to run SheepShaver

Best,
