Good linux platform?
Hi,
I've been trying to install Sheepshaver, and I've got it to run but get a flash of a black window then crash out. From reading it looks like a conflict with the OS's security modules, which I'm not prepared to disable.
I'll create a VM & run i586 linux inside it, and run SS on that.
Can anyone advise of a (recent) linux distribution on which they have Sheepshaver running (relatively) stably?
Thanks for any help, and saving me hours of trial-and-error!
David

Re: Good linux platform?
Any reason why you run SheepShaver in a VM with Linux instead of simply on your host OS?
Which host machine and OS?
Which Linux distro do you run in the VM?

Re: Good linux platform?
I'm running openSUSE 13.2 64bit (soon to upgrade to Tumbleweed).
Host machine is a Dell i7 with SSD HD.
I'm trying to pick a distro & release for the VM
I don't like changing the low memory access protection for the host machine, as this is system wide. I can't find an AppArmour profile for sheepshaver and I'm not prepared to turn this off system wide
Creating & installing a VM is quick & easy - I have several which I turn on & off as needed. It's (relatively) safe

Then SheepShaver will not run. Alternatively you can run SheepShaver as root, but I suppose you do not like that eithter.JeToJedno wrote:I don't like changing the low memory access protection for the host machine,
SheepShaver will run on Ubuntu and similar distros.

Re: Good linux platform?
SheepShaver should run on any Debian-based Linux (Mint is a good option); Arch has also been known to work.
Re: Good linux platform?
Thanks
David
That's the reason I'll put it in a VM - it can run there without the added protections and without compromising my main system. Then SheepShaver will not run.

Thanks for both replies. I'm familiar with ubuntu and unfamiliar with debian ... so it's an easy choice.
I'll let you know how I get on

Ah; Ubuntu *is* a Debian system. So is Mint, and most other modern Linuxes that aren't based on Slackware or RedHat.JeToJedno wrote:Thanks for both replies. I'm familiar with ubuntu and unfamiliar with debian ... so it's an easy choice.

I never tried Sheepshaver on Linux without a desktop environment, does it run without one?
By the way, this is an interesting map of Unix systems with some Linux in the middle:
