Startup disk will not work on this Macintosh model

Post by MetalSnake »

I'm trying to install Mac OS 7.6 in SheepShaver, but when I boot the install image I get the message "Startup disk will not work on this Macintosh model (…)"

I even tried to boot an installed OS 8.5, and install 7.6 on another disk. That worked, but booting in that installed System fails with the same error.

I tried different 7.6 CD images some english and some german ones. All result in the same error.

The MAC OS ROM has crc32: 2f6572b4 that should be the well known new world rom.

My config file: (btw. what's up with the ignoreillegal setting? In the tutorial it's said to keep "Ignore illegal instructions" off, but searching the forum I often saw that it should be set to true)

Don't you need an old world ROM to boot pre-8.5 OSes?

Yes. There is a version of 8.1 for the first G3 iMac, but that's the exception, not the rule. If you're using any version of System/Mac OS 7.x, you must use an Old World PPC ROM, not a New World PPC ROM.
