9.0 or 9.4?

Post by podolsky »

I am running a straight OS 9.0 rom. Is there a later version and if so, where can I download it and is it better?

Thanks!

ROM? Systems newer than 6 or 7, I don't believe are built-in in ROM. Especially in a PowerPC machine.
Are you sure you don't mean Virtual Hard Drive? :???:

I guess I was not clear - when I get About this Computer it says I am running Version: Mac OS 9.0. Is there an even later version of OS 9 to run than 9.0? I thought I read here somewhere that some folks were running a 9.4 or a 9.0.4. If so, where might I find it and is there any advantages to doing so. My setup is fine and I am not looking to fix what isn't broke. Thanks!

The latest MacOS that SheepShaver can run is 9.0.4. You may be able to find a 9.0 to 9.0.4 updater.

SheepShaver runs 9.04 as highest version. You can find the update from 9.0 to 9.04 on the net.

See here for example: http://www.gla.ac.uk/~gwm1h/macos9/

Thank you! What is the best way to apply that updater? What does one gain from going from 9.0 -> 9.0.4?

I don't have access to Internet in my installation so I cannot follow the instruction exactly. Is there a way to access the update locally?
Really appreciate this.

There's not much of a gain going from 9.0 to 9.0.4. Mostly to gain compatibility with apps like iTunes without having to change the OS's version number and have some bug fixes. Most of the improvements are for the actual Mac machines, not so much running it in something like Sheepshaver.

Thanks. I would like to keep as current as possible. What is the best way to apply the update? I tried Software Update in the OS9 Control Panel but that way requires Internet connection which I have not implement in SS.

Thanks!

The easiest way is to download the update to your host, put it in the shared folder and copy it to the guest. Then use StuffIt Expander to extract the SMI and run it to load the virtual disk. The run the update.

That does not work anymore. Apple removed the old updates, or the the server address, a couple of years ago.
