I have no idea what I'm doing

Post by Hawkgal »

Hi
I downloaded a game from mackintosh garden and it told me to download sheep shaver for mac in order to run it. Which i did with the help of a youtube channel but when i click on the file in sheep shaver it says "this document could not be opened because the application that created it could not be found"
Could someone please explicitly explain to me how to get the game to work? i'm not very good with computers but if its in simple terms i may be able to work it out.

Thank you, i just want to play my game.

It's Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego if thats any help? I've literally been searching online for hours and have no idea how to get it to work.

1. You use SheepShaver in OSX? Which version of OSX?

2. Which file did you download from Macintosh Garden and what kind of file is it (file name and extension)?

3. How did you get the file or its content to show up in SheepShaver?

Looks like you downloaded these two CD images?
http://macintoshgarden.org/games/where- ... ego-cd-rom

In the description it is said that the CDs are hybrid Mac/Windows ones.
Presuming you still have old flavors of Windows, you might run the game natively in Windows.
The read me on CD2 says the game will run under Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and PowerMac.
In addition to that, I can confirm that Windows98SE will work too.
Newer versions of Windows do not seem to work as the game is way too old.

if you choose to play the PC version, I might upload zipped CD images at Mega.
You would have to unzip and burn those to CD with IMGBurn on your side.
Does that sound doable for you?

If you are tempted by other games at Macintoshgarden, please consider setting up a Mac emulator.
There are good guides in this forum and its not that hard to succeed. :)

Edit:
I had a short look at the pair of newer CDs hosted at Max1zzz´s server.
The readme on the later CDs from 2001 tells this:

"I. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

CPU: 486DX/66 MHz or better
Operating System: Windows 95/98/ME/XP
RAM: 8 MB (16 MB recommended)
Hard Drive Space: 5 MB
Graphics: SVGA video card 640 x 480 display, 256 colors; High Color
supported on Pentium(R) with DirectX on Windows 95/98
CD-ROM Speed: 2x or faster
Audio: Windows-compatible sound device; DirectX-compatible sound
cards on Windows 95/98
Modem: Optional for Internet features
Internet Service Provider: Optional for Internet features"

These CDs may be easier to run with newer Widows rigs if the game complies with the XP compatibility mode.
However it does not run with W10-64, but XP is not out of scope even today.
If you are in Europe, I might send the two 2001 Cds if that helps.

Thank so much for your help. Sorry i should have been clearer.
Yes they are the files i downloaded I have Mac OS X Yosemite or I have a PC that has not been updated since 2010.

I got sheep shaver on my mac because that's what it told me to do and that is working i just don't know how to get the game to work on it.
Unfortunately i'm in Australia

I will give the 2001 downloads a go and see if that works on my PC. Thanks

If you can´t find an old XP box, you might try SheepShaver too of course. :)

For SheepShaver in OSX, download a few items first.
http://unarchiver.c3.cx/unarchiver (Utility to inflate SIT files in OSX)
http://www.emaculation.com/sheepshaver/ ... rPrefs.zip (SS Prefs editor)
http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/disk-images-emulators (Boot disk)
Plus the 4MB Macrom linked at the Macintoshgarden site.
You do already have Ronald´s latest SheepShaver build as you posted above.

Create a new folder named Classic in the root directory of your Mac and move all emulator related files into it.

Run SheepShaverPrefs and set your prefs accordingly:

The ROM file may be dragged into place from Finder to tell SS the path.
Add the System Disk from Macintoshgarden and the inflated ISO files to the volumes list as shown.
Its not needed to set RAM to 1024, but do check the "Ignore Illegal Memory Access" box.

Close SheepShaverPrefs and run SheepShaver.
Install the game from CD1 - also install Quicktime 2.5 from CD1 as the game needs that.
You should get something like the picture below and may try the game now.
Note that SS likes to crash often on my side with the game, good luck!
