SS 2.4 on OSX 10.11.3 always displaying interrogation mark..

Post by PlopNut »

Hi !

First, thank you very much in advance for any answer !

I have a problem with SS 2.4 on my macbook pro retina under MacOSX El Capitan 10.11.3. I followed all the official instructions (I think) and SS is still displaying the old mac with the interrogation mark…

I got all the material from the torrent (link removed), which seems quite official. I just changed the SS version, to the latest as the given one wasn’t launching.

SS is in a folder on the desktop with all the other files.

Do someone knows this issue ? Has any idea about how to fix it ?

Thank you in advance for your attention, best !

This means that SheepShaver cannot find a working startup disk. Either something is wrong with the startup (install) disk image or the path to the image file is not entered correctly in preferences. (Physical CDs cannot be used in OSX 10.11.)

Not sure which files you got from the torrent site. There are no 'official' SheepShaver downloads and no 'official' instructions. The torrent you used certainly is not. Downloads and guide from our site come closest to being 'official'.

For us to able to judge what you did, post here the content of your preferences file:
Open Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities/) and type at the prompt

Code: Select all

open ~/.sheepshaver_prefs
followed by a return. The file will open in your default text editor.

Select and copy all content and paste it here in your reply.

There are paths to two disk images. Which is which? Is one of the images created by you? That would be an empty volume. I suppose that the other came with the download. That one could then be either an OS9 install disk image or (more likely) a disk image with installed OS9 system.

According to the paths in the prefs, "OS9.img" is in the same folder with SheepShaver and "MacOS9" is in a folder "HD" in the SheepShaver folder. Is that correct? And which image file came with the download?

I retried with the Emaculation guidelines.

So I used only the OS9.omg file as install disk image.

OS9.img (which cale with the download) is in the same folder, and MacOS9 which I created, is in HD.

But, I still have the same problem... Nothing is found...

Terminal gives me this answer :

disk OS9.img
cdrom /dev/poll/cdrom
extfs Shared-MacOS9
screen win/1200/800
windowmodes 0
screenmodes 0
seriala
serialb /dev/null
rom ROM
bootdrive 0
bootdriver 0
ramsize 536870912
frameskip 0
gfxaccel true
nocdrom false
nonet false
nosound false
nogui false
noclipconversion false
ignoresegv true
ignoreillegal false
jit true
jit68k false
keyboardtype 5
ether slIrp
keycodes true
keycodefile keycodes
mousewheelmode 0
mousewheellines 1
dsp /dev/dsp
mixer /dev/mixer
ignoresegv true
idlewait true

Any idea ?

Many thanks !

Apparently the OS9.img is somehow considered not bootable by SheepShaver.

You can try in its place the Mac OS 9 boot image that you can find when you search for the Redundant Robot site. If that one works, then the problem is with the image file.

(Note that the OS9.img from Redundant Robot is not a full OS9 installation, it only contains the System Folder.)

Edit: Unrelated to your problem, but networking setting should be "slirp", with lowercase "i".

Also unrelated, but cdrom /dev/poll/cdrom won't work -- this should be pointing to the installation iso, not a /dev device.

Sorry, but that is not (entirely) correct. In OSX 10.8 and later this setting is irrelevant because physical CDs cannot be used in SheepShaver anyway. An installation .iso (or .cdr, or read/write .dmg, or .toast) image can simply be added to the volumes list in preferences. SheepShaver will boot from it and, provided the image file is locked in the Finder, the MacOS installer will work fine.
