10.4 on 10.10...

Thanks again to everyone here who helped me get Mac OS9 working on my OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Mac, via SheepShaver. It works amazingly great!
I would now like to install (emulate) Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) on a different Mac that's natively running 10.10 (Yosemite), and reclaim some more good ol' applications that I've been missing.

Can someone kindly tell me the best emulator to use, or the best procedure to do so, to point me in the right direction?

Many thanks again.

Hi,

There are two ways (PearPC and Qemu), of which only one is advisable: use Qemu.
See here for a small and incomplete guide: http://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/ppc ... mu-for-osx
and better use this version of qemu: http://www.open.ou.nl/hsp/downloads3/Qe ... 082016.zip
This version is as complete as possible, but doesn't support sound. It can run OS 9.1 up to OSX 10.5.

Please note that emulating 10.4 is in no way as fast as running OS 9 in SheepShaver. So running games is problematic.

Good luck,

Tiger (Server) in a virtual machine may be an option, if Classic support won´t be needed.
Leopard my offer better integration as X86 VM and it has Rosetta PPC emulation too, just as Snow Leopard.

While Tiger and Tiger Server work fine in an X86 VM, Leopard and Leopard Server have processor dependencies that can cause issues running in a VM on modern hardware. They'll run on a Core 2 Duo or older, but not on Haswell, Broadwell or Kaby Lake architectures, for instance. Leopard is also significantly slower performance-wise than Tiger in VMs where it does run, as it leans heavily on offloading graphics tasks to the GPU, which VMs don't tend to handle that well.

I have a virtual machine running Tiger, in VirtualBox, it's much better than Qemu, as it doesn't emulate the CPU.

Way faster, but I had to use IDE emulation, rather than SATA. Tigers SATA drivers should work with VB, but for some reason they don't. They may have fixed this with later versions of VB.

No, they didn't; Tiger and Leopard were never officially supported by VB, and after 4.16 or so, changes were made to improve more modern interfaces that broke some support for Tiger and Leopard. Leopard suffered the most; Tiger is still usable. However, there's not much that will run on Tiger that won't run on Snow Leopard; x86 Tiger doesn't do Classic.

Will VMware work for Tiger, or Leopard?

Depends on your host system for Leopard; yes for Tiger. Sort of. It only runs the Server variants, unless you get a hex editor out and nop out the check that prevents it running on the client versions. Parallels has similar issues.

I have an old version of VMWare running Leopard fine on a C2D. Same for Tiger, which I had installed too.
As adespoton posted in #4, the support for C2D or C2Q was pretty good, newer CPUs will have issues.
I´ll try the Leopard instance with my i5-2540 notebook, the "newest" cpu I own. :)

Works with VMWare Fusion8. Not the fastest virtual machine maybe, but working so far.

So are you saying that Fusion 8 is running Leopard on your i5? Because I've never got that to work for me; i5 and i7 are both no-go territory from what I've tried.

No joke, i5, 10.12.3, Fusion 8, Leopard Server.
Of course the i5 is Sandy Bridge known to run even 10.6 natively with a patched kernel.
Would be interesting to try Haswell, Skylake and the other cool acronyms.

I've got Haswell and Broadwell, as well as a Leopard Server license, so I'll probably take you up on that.
