SFTP between SheepShaver (or Qemu) and macOS host?

Post by emendelson »

Has anyone been able to connect a SheepShaver or Qemu guest running OS 9 with a macOS Sierra host?

With both SheepShaver and Qemu, I can use MacSFTP to connect to remote servers (university file servers). And I can connect to my macOS Sierra machine via SFTP from a Windows machine on my network. (I have remote login switched on in Sierra.) But I can't connect from MacSFTP under SheepShaver or Qemu to the Sierra host.

Am I missing something obvious, or is this impossible?

Look at this post/thread: http://www.emaculation.com/forum/viewto ... 854#p56806

I can't try myself as I still run Mountain Lion. In order to reach Mac OS within SheepShaver from my host I use this method: http://drupal.bitfunnel.net/drupal/macosx-bridge-qemu . The point is that en0 on the host has no direct network access, but only via a bridge. And the tap device of SheepShaver (or QEMU) gets added to that same bridge.

Don't know whether it also works the other way around – accessing the host from within SheepShaver or QEMU, and whether it also works on Sierra.

EDIT:
For SheepShaver on Sierra, you might need to change the permissions of the tap device:

Thanks for this - I was hoping there might be some way to do it that I could automate for a few non-technical users I support, but all these methods require real expertise. I'll experiment, though, and will report back if I have any success.

Thanks again!

Regarding http://drupal.bitfunnel.net/drupal/macosx-bridge-qemu, instead of choosing "Manually" at "Configure IPv4", choose "DHCP with manual address". That way you only have to enter the actual IP address manually.

For all the other stuff – if you can get it to work on Sierra – you could set up an AppleScript. That will leave a little bit of one-time configuration to the users you support. But with an AppleScript doing the required actions when starting SheepShaver or Qemu, they should live happily ever after.

I've been experimenting but haven't been able to make this work under Sierra. I'll keep trying, but if anyone gets it working, I'll certainly be grateful for details. Meanwhile, thanks for these pointers, which seem to be the way to go.
