Yahoo is pulling the plug on Geocities:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/163765/s ... isted.html

I had a Geocities page when I was in ninth grade. I guess that would have been about 1996.

AOL pulled down all of its "hometown" personal sites last year. They should have let them stay up, permanently. When Yahoo pulls the plug on Geocities, it will create another few hundred thousand dead links all over the internets. Sad.

Grab your old timey vMac and Executor stuff while you still can:

Someone posted on Slashdot today:

"I posted earlier about how Geocities was the early web 2.0 in practice, where anybody could post anything and contribute to the community. I'm sure that there is a wealth of information on geocities about obscure topics that *Might* come in handy if you were to let your true inner geek reign supreme. I.E. I have bios roms of early mac's that I found on Geocities sites that couldn't be found anywhere else, and I'm sure that if they were posted nowadays, they would be subject to lawsuits or take-down notices by Apple."

Hee hee.

Yahoo will be taking down all of Geocities at the end of October. Get what you need while you still can!

I guess I'll make mirrors of the old Unofficial Executor page and the homepage of KEGS32.

I read somewhere that Geocities is still heavily trafficked. Apparently, Geocities pages get more traffic than Twitter. Curious that Yahoo wouldn't try to somehow monetize all those clicks.

Why would they close it if it is so well used?

I have been on a few geocities websites recently, just by finding them via google, so it is a shame that they are closing.

Just last night I found a really great "Morrowind" mod on an old Geocities site. Once again, Geocities came through for me.

But I guess that prevailing opinion on the internets is that old stuff doesn't really matter. Twitter is important and Geocities is not important. Sad.

I've mirrored the KEGS32 site:

Look at this Google News search for Geocities:

http://news.google.com/news?q=geocities ... =en&tab=wn

If you click through to page two and beyond, you will find that it is full of articles and press releases that refer to Geocities sites. This are not articles ABOUT Geocities closing (what I was looking for) but rather about organizations that actually USE Geocities for their web presence.

Very sad.
