Hmmm. Maybe I will just host the Marathon files locally. Those are freeware, right?

I'm not overly concerned with the illegal distribution of old software. I suppose it is wrong, but it just doesn't bother me too much these days. I've become mellow and nostalgic in my old age, I guess.

The distribution doesn't bother me too much, either, except that people should call it what it is and not declare "It's FREE!" because they feel like it - especially if the original author is still supporting it.

I suppose technically it might be difficult to track down something that explicitly says the original 68k Marathon engine is free, but certainly the data files are openly available.

Oh... I thought that the Marathon games were, explicitly, freeware at this point.

Yeah. Marathon, at least, is free for real...

Anyway, here's a cool word processor you missed: http://www.asynchronous.ca/fwp/

It's a hefty in features but light on space usage, just like all good 68K software. It seriously has almost enough "oomph" to compete with the likes of FrameMaker as a long document editing system, but is somewhat more oriented towards general (non technical) writing.

That link is sort of not working. What's the name of the program?

Odd. It works for me. Anyway the program is Fullwrite Professional and the site includes the official freeware registration key and a download link.

Cool. I'll check it out and probably add it to the software collection! Thanks for the recommendation.

I added the program to the collection.

Fun fact: the website you linked to blocks Korean IP addresses. :(

I managed to find SoftPC 3.1, but I'm not sure if it's abandonware or not.

It does work in both Sheepshaver and Basilisk II. Keep in mind this, however: To run SoftPC in Basilisk II, turn off the (68040's) processor caches. Otherwise, emulation won't function correctly. Also, Sheepshaver can't run SoftPC with the FPU option on (possible due to either Sheepshaver's limits or the program can't recognize the PPC's FPU).

There are people on that board selling used classic Macs in Korea!

I'm going to buy one!

Thanks for the link!

Color Classic. A very complete looking system!

150 000 Korean won (that's 99 US dollars). But I missed it.

I updated the Software page:

http://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/68k ... #utilities

It now contains a copy of Disinfectant, which is perfect for all your old Mac virus scanning needs.

As always, I'm very happy to list software that users suggest. If it is free (shareware, freeware, etc) I will list whatever you send!

A utility to edit Type/Creator information can be very useful when working with files transferred from a PC

ResEdit is the obvious choice.

A slightly more convenient alternative is Snitch, which neatly extends the Get Info dialog. Unfortunately, it looks like the author still has the nerve to charge $20 (!) for it.

But my favorite is Type Resolve, which is conveniently lightweight (even compared to ResEdit). I can't seem to find it online right now, so you can have my ancient copy:

Thanks Jorpho. I got your e-mail too. I'm travelling about now but will have regular internet again at the end of the week. Will update the wiki at that time!

I added Type Resolve 2.0.1 to the software page. Here's a direct download:

Big thanks to Jorpho... last week this file was available NOWHERE online. Now it is available both here and on Macintosh Garden.

As always, I'm looking for recommendations for good 68K freeware and shareware software to add to the site.

Long live Type Resolve! It might not seem like much now, but back in the day it was pretty handy to have something like that on a floppy without the considerable overhead of Apple File Exchange or ResEdit.

Anyway, I saw Asterax many, many years ago and, having missed its name, never thought I would be able to describe it in sufficient terms that I would be able to find it again. But it was mentioned on a board recently, so now I can contemplate playing it eventually!

Perhaps you might try putting the System 7 Today link for Escape Velocity in the software page? It really rocks . In Escape Velocity , I'm a Rebellion(not owning a rebellion ship-simply opposing the Confederation) . I have a Corvette , 5+ mil and the entire Confed system is after me . Lucky though , my Corvette is strong enough to destroy a Confederation Frigate . Anyway , you might try adding this :

Thanks for that link asakusa, and welcome to the forum.

I'll check out that software and probably add it to the site wiki!

Musashi crashes my Basilisk II for Windows setup every time I run it. Any suggestions, asakusa?

This might be a good one for kataetheweirdo to test out for his compatibility list.

First of all ,I have to apologize ClockWise for letting him waste his precious time due to my carelessness.
At first I did not understand why Musashi crashes as it works just fine on my KanjiTalk7.5.5.on XP. However I was forgetting that I am using an older version of Basilisk II.Version 0.8.0.142.
I use it simply because it is the best.A Japanese patch is available for the GUI so that the menus are shown in Japanese, and the low power mode works fine.
In 0.9.JIT-3.win32 version(which uses the same GUI)low power mode does not work as CPU usage sticks to 100% all the time.
And newer 1.0 version does not boot KT7.5.5 with the ROM from Performa630 which I own and still use.(It boots with Quadra 650 ROM only.I got it from somewhere in the net,but I prefer to use the legal one)
I found out that both Japanese and English Musashi crashes just by double clicking them in 0.9.JIT and 1.0 on KT7.5.5.Disabling JIT makes no difference.
It was the same for KT7.5.1(I sometimes use it just for Decor and desktop pattern ,and I have the CD disk and it can be booted by 1.0 with Performa630 ROM),fine in 0.8.0.142 but crashed in 0.9.JIT and 1.0.
However on MacOS7.6.1 with Japanese Language Kit(which I got from Macintosh Garden some time ago, being illegal as I do not own the CD disk but I just wanted to know how 7.6 was looked like),both English and Japanese Musashi worked fine not only in 0.8.0.142 but also in 0.9.JIT and 1.0.
I also tried Mac OS 8.1(got it same as 7.6)but Musashi worked only in 0.8.0.142,not in 0.9.JIT and 1.0.
So the conclusion is Musashi does not work in BII except the version 0.8.142,or all three BII versions above on MacOS7.6.1.
It seems that the account creating dialogue(sort of a wizard)at the beginning fails to start on the error cases.

Maybe I should have posted this topic on site like System 7 Today forum instead,as they promote the sofwares without Appearance.
I thought I need to mention that Musashi is a freeware for almost 2 years now while it is still described and distributed as a shareware in some English sites.
I never imagined that a simple software like Musashi crashes in newer versions of BII.
It is my fault for not checking properly before posting.I am sorry.

As it turned out that Musashi is not useful on BII,I checked to see if Sweetmail works on BII. I used this freeware in my Performa630 before Musashi became free, and it has same capability as Musashi.
It worked in all three BII versions above on KT7.5.1,KT7.5.5,MacOS7.6.1 with JLK,and MacOS8.1 with JLK.
The only annoyance is that it requires Appearance.(The download link from the Apple site seem to be dead but you can get it from Emaculation, thanks)
You can download Sweetmail from the official site http://homepage.mac.com/frithrah/
and a mirror site http://sweet.221b.net/
but these two are Japanese sites,so better download from
http://www.tobiasjung.net/html/sm_download_en.php
It is a trilingual software that starts as an English version on English OS and as Japanese and German versions in each OS.You can switch the language in the preference if you need.(It started as an English version on MacOS7.6.1 and 8.1 even though JLK is installed)

It now seems to me that BII is best suited for the use on Mac OS 7.6.1.
All three BII versions above can boot it ,each with three different ROMs(performa630,quadra650,quadra700/900), each with Appearance on and off.Musashi works,Desktoppatern works(maybe Decor too based on this fact).I hope someday Apple release it for free.

Sorry for the late reply.
