I still would like to run 6.0.8 in colour in Basilisk II. Is there any patch or setting to force 24-bit addressing in Basilisk II?

To see which OS versions can boot in Basilisk II, please consult the second sentence of the "Description" section on this page:

The emulation of older Macs capable of running 6.0.8 broke in Basilisk II a long, long (11 years?) time ago.

Are you in Windows? You could try out this old build:

I'm not sure if it will work. Let us know what happens.

It is true that Build 94 does allow you to run System 6.0.8, but only with a 68000 (Classic, SE, Plus, etc.) ROM. So essentially, the result you get is not much better than a standard build of MinivMac with a Plus ROM (with addition device capabilities such as buggy network capabilities). You don't get colour or even the ability to run at a higher resolution than a Macintosh Plus. Trying the same thing with a Macintosh SE/30-IIv-IIvx-etc. ROM gives you the same error message you got with modern Basilisk II builds: 24-bit address must be enabled.

I haven't tried Build 94 with the older Macintosh II rom, but I have a feeling the same error will occur. I don't think 6.0.8 capability with a non-Classic/Plus/etc. ROM was ever implemented. I think all the mentions of broken compatibility in later Basilisk II documentation relate to the fact in can no longer use a Classic/etc. ROM, rather than specifically breaking the ability to run System 6.

Still, it can't be that hard to "cripple" Basilisk II into only using 24-bit addressing. Or am I dreaming here?

You could try posting on the development mailing (at Sourceforge), perhaps?

I wonder if the internet connection sharing could be using with System 6? Wouldn't that be fun?

This would be really perfect if someone could
compile a version of BasiliskII using 24bit
adressing mode for a MacII ROM with sound support!

On the other hand there is MiniVMacII in development
with some features already working, so it will
certainly be worth waiting for it.

Greetings!

You should try Build 94 with a Classic ROM. You just won't have color or a bigger screen resolution.

Oh. I remember the GUI for '94 did have a tab for Ethernet. I guess it was just a placeholder.

BTW, I also tried SoftMac (ugh), but the same "not 24-bit addressing" error comes up.

Rather than patching Basilisk II, is there some change that could be made to System 6, forcing it to run?

EDIT: A follow-up to my previous question. Maybe "Connectix Optima" will do the trick?

Quote:
Optima is an INIT which allows Macintosh systems to operate in 32-bit mode under System 6. It is not compatible with Multifinder or System 7, and requires 32-bit clean applications.

The question, would this be useful in the boot sequence? It's pretty much useless if it is used only after System 6 has booted.
