Hi all. I'm working to install OS 7.5.3 on Windows 98, using the older 142 build. I've followed the setup guide to the letter, but when I try to install the OS, the program comes back with an "illegal operation" error and immediately shuts down. Any ideas?

Hi, welcome!

Can you please tell us when exactly the crash happens? Is it when you click Run in the GUI?
Please indicate to where you have been able to follow the guide, and whether you had any issues in following it.

And can you also paste the contents of your BasiliskII_prefs file in your answer?

Best,
Cat_7

Sure, the crash happens when I double click the “System 7.5.3 01of19.smi” file (as seen in Figure 8 of the 142 setup guide). I can agree to the terms, but it crashes while in the process of checking the 19 files.

Here is the contents of my BasiliskII_prefs file:

Hi,

Did you wait long enough for the disk images to be copied to the install.hfv? Unfortunately HFV Explorer doesn't give any feedback when copying has finished.

I'm in the process of installing Windows 98 in Virtual box to see if the procedure is correct for Windows 98 and whether I perhaps run into the same problem. What a dinosaur, what trip down memory lane. ;-)

Best,

I thought so, but I guess I can try to re-copy the disk images. What's really strange is that it will sometimes complete the process at random and move on to the installation phase, but inevitably crash a few seconds later. Even more mysterious, at one point, a different kind of error popped up regarding memory shortage. Could this be an issue?

How much memory is free in your windows host?
For Basilisk, setting 32 Mb for Mac OS should be enough.

Plenty of memory free on Windows (22GB). I also tried downgrading from 64 to 32 in Basilisk, but got the same result. Here's some more information about the illegal operations error, if it helps at all:

"BasiliskII caused an invalid page fault in module BasiliskII.exe at 015f:00440a97."

Hi,

I'm assuming you are using the BasiliskII build that was linked to from our guide.
That build was created in 2008 on a newer machine. Perhaps you could try the original build from here:
http://www.emaculation.com/basilisk/Bas ... 012001.zip

Just replace the BasiliskII.exe file in your current installation.

Hi,

I installed Windows 98 and Basilisk 142, following our guide. I couldn't reproduce your error, so it will be difficult to assess what is going on in your machine. I'll send you a PM.

Best,
Cat_7
