Hi,

I have found a way to reliably recover from the BasiliskII for Windows black screen issues (at least on my machine  )

I use a hard disk image and a cd image as volumes in the GUI.
The hard disk image is the topmost entry, so BasiliskII should boot from it.

However, if I change resolution in the GUI, BasiliskII shows a black screen. But only if I did NOT set the Windows Refresh Rate to Dynamic.
If I close the application using Task Manager and start it again through the GUI, BasiliskII starts from the Cd image and shows a normal screen.
I then shutdown MacOS and restart BasiliskII from the GUI. It then boots from the hard disk image and shows the normal screen.

This (at least to me) clearly indicates something goes wrong on the hard disk image before the black screen error occurs. Something that is repaired with booting from a different volume. If I remove the cd image from the volumes list, at restart, I get a question mark, indicating no usable system folder has been found.

Good luck,

I'm interested in trying this out for myself, but I'm confused by what you mean by CD image. Is it a Mac or Windows image?

This is about the Windows version of Basilisk.
What you need is a cd image of the Mac OS install cd (an exact copy on your hard disk). You can make one with most cd burning software.

I find that opening a volume with DSK/HFV Explorer will reset things.

I can use BII JIT with ATI but not nVidia drivers and hardware. NVidia always boots BII to black screen.

True! and a much easier workaround. Thanks!

I hope this is posting to the right place. I've been running Basilisk ver 0.9 for quite a while with no problem. When I saw that a newer version was available, I decided to try it.

I followed all the instructions on set up, volume creation, etc., and everything works as advertized until I attempt to start the emulated MAC.

At this point I get a black screen, and I have to use Windows Task Manager to exit the program. This occurs with the image I still use with Basilisk 0.9 as well as with the boot image I created while installing Basilisk 1.0.

I hate to show my ignorance, but I can't make heads or tails out of the posts on this thread, and was hoping for a simple solution even someone like me can understand.

Any advice will be appreciated. I'm running Win XP home edition with SP3 on a Dell with an Althon 64 X2 Dual core CPU, 2.31 GHz and 960 Megs of RAM if that helps.

Thanx,

Buddha

Have you ever used HFV Explorer?

I have not followed the advice mentioned in this post, but one of the posters seems to suggest that just browsing your hard disk image in HFV Explorer can help solve the problem.

Here's a link:

http://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/hfvexplorer

It is fairly self explanatory. If you need some screenshots or info on how to use HFVExplorer, the Basilisk II setup guide might help:

Thanx for the advice. I use the Explorer frequently, and it hasn't had any effect on this issue.

I can view the image created in the setup process for version 1.0 as a drive under version 0.9 with no problem, although I can't boot from it. That seems to indicate that it is a valid image.

I also have 2 bootable images that I use with version 0.9 with no problem, but both result in the black screen when I try to use them with version 1.0.

Something other than the disk images is giving me black screen with version 1.0 no matter what I do, and I can't figure out what it is or how to fix it.

I had the (sometimes black/ gray/ no screen) issue for Basilisk on my 32 Vista machine.

I tried the above mentioned fixes to no avail. Did some digging around on the web and came across a you tube video that claimed to have a fix. I tried what it suggested, again to no avail. Then I did a variation of it, and it worked like a charm.

Read all the way through prior to trying.

1) Here is the YouTube link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J22uznhj4xs

2) Here is file one which is described. http://t.bothorel.free.fr/Divers/BasiliskII_win32_20012001.zip

3) Here is file two which is described. http://gwenole.beauchesne.info/projects/basilisk2/files/BasiliskII-1.0-0.20060501.1.win32.zip

4) I replaced my current Basiliskii.exe for the one listed as new in file two.

5) Next I right clicked on my new Basiliskii.exe icon and went to "properties" and checked "run as administrator".

6) Then I right clicked on the basiliskii gui and went to "properties" and checked "run as administrator".

7) NOTE* I did not check "run in XP compatability mode" for either of the above as the you tube video suggested. (for some reason that didn't work for me and i just happened to try it without checking this option)

8) Worked like a charm after.

**Now a quick question for you** I have sheepshaver with 0s 9.04 update running great. What os do you recommend should i use for basiliskii so that between the two i will have the most compatibility of all programs? What ROM do you recommend that I use for sheepshaver with 0.04, what about for basilisk with the os you suggest.

Thanks in advance.

Using the older version of Basilisk II has been the standard suggestion when none of the fixes work. But it is OLD.

There is another old version stickied at the top of the forum that will also work.

System 7.5.5 should be good for you. It will run most 68K apps.

I got rid of Vista and went with XP, so some of the suggestions don't apply to me. After having tried everything that has been suggested, along with anything I could come up with on my own, I still get the black screen when attempting to run 1.0.

I can still run my older version (0.8), as well as Sheepshaver with no problems. It seems I'll just have to accept the fact that 1.0 flat out will not run on my system. Since I can't get anything to display, I don't know if I'm missing anything or not.

Thanx to everyone for your suggestions, and I'd surely appreciate any more. I don't lose anything by trying.

Hi,

I'm new to this forum, but recently I have been playing a lot with basilisk II under win7 x64. It looks like the issue is quite random and it is not related nor to the image use to boot the emulator and neither to the rom file.

It looks like changing parameters (available memory, model, com setting, compatibility settings in windows) can temporary unlock the situation and Basilisk II boots up fine. But then, if restarted, it is black screen again.

To me it looks either as a SDL issue or as a synchronisation issue in the emulated hardware. Basilisk II under Macosx does not have this issue, so i really have no clue ...

cheers
Enrico

I have also been testing on Windows 7 RTM, but the 32bit flavor. I am seeing the same issue. I was having the disk corruption issue, but resolved that by setting my disk image file to be read only in Windows. Through testing I can see that it does not matter if you modify the config, change parameters, etc. I can simply keep launching and killing the application and it will work after the 3rd or fourth time. On the other hand Sheepshaver works every time on the first try.

I am curious are you using an ATI card? I am using an ATI 4650 and HDMI audio.

Also, I was unable to get sound to work when using the old DirectX version of Basilisk II.

Hi,

i have an ATI graphics but i can also switch to an integrated Intel: anyway result is the same, always black screen.
This morning I tried launching and killing basilisk II but at sixth attempt i still get black screen.

When it starts i have no problems with audio, it just works.

thanks

I'm sure you already know, but just in case you don't...

This older version doesn't have the black screen problem:

I think.

Hi,

actually I did not know ... Thanks for the info !

It is working with no black screen, but, if I am not wrong, this build does not JIT compiler. Given current Core2Duo CPU's power I think it is not such a big issue (basilisk emulation target should be roughly a 33 MHz 68030 and a 2.4 GHz cpu should be able to emulate it at real speed), but it was a nice addition. Until the black screen issue is fixed, I will anyway use this version.

thanks
