When I click "Start" in the GUI, the program just crashes. I followed this guide: http://emaculation.com/doku.php/basilisk_ii_setup. I've tried using an older BasiliskII.exe but then I just get this error:

What ROM image are you using?

If you followed the directions wholly, then the ROM image is usually the problem, since it is the only variable.

Did you get this error upon booting the BOOT DISK or after you had installed the Mac OS?

I've tried several ROMs I got from a torrent. They're all giving me this same error. I get the error as soon as I click "Start" in the GUI.

I asked if you were able to install Mac OS. I'm going to assume that you were NOT able to.

Are you able to boot this disk:

http://www.emaculation.com/System70_boot.zip

If you are unable to boot that disk, are you able to boot this disk:

Hi,

Can you tell us what disk you are starting from? And which Model ID and CPU Type you have chosen on the Memory/Misc tab in the GUI?

For mac os 7 you should set it to MacII ci and maximum 68030 processor.
For mac os 8 you should set it to Quadra 900 and can use the 68040 processor (but first try with the 68030 processor)

Best,
Cat_7
