Hello again, nice to write to you again!

I'm writing from a Windows machine, and I need to set up SheepShaver on this one. Problem is, SS crashes after it finishes to boot up.

I have tried with my first .dsk disk, created from Mac OSX, and with a new one. I'm using a new world rom and a working OS9 TOAST image. I hope unzipping it from Windows doesn't mess up the internal hierarchy, I know there are this kind of issues with Windows...

Thanks for the time, hoping for answer

Yours, FabTheZen

Hi,

Can you tell us where exactly it crashes? before reaching the desktop? Or during startup when the progress bar is still shown? Or just before the disks appear on the desktop?
What networking properties have you set? What setting for "ignore illegal memory access"?

Assuming the image you mention is an install CD image, can you boot from it and do a clean install from it?

Best,
Cat_7

Hey, how much RAM did you allocate for SheepShaver? I was having this exact problem about 5 minutes ago. If you up the RAM to 512, then it shouldn't crash after the MacOS loading screen disappears.

I found this out from this post.

It crashes just after finishing the loading, i.e. before showing icons. Setting the RAM to 512 MB, big as the disk, made the emulator work.

It's strange that it's in the windows guide this passage is not mentioned.....

Thanks a bunch, now I'd have a couple more questions if you don't mind:
- What is the correct ethernet driver for SS in Windows 7? Is the windows "Me" one ok?
- Do I need to use Raw Keycodes for some reason?

Yours,
FabTheZen

Edit: Just found out that it wasn't the "Ignore Illegal memory access", but, surprisingly for me, the quantity of RAM.
Tank you Compupaq, and thanks to Cat_7 too for immediate response. See you soon!

Hi

This error occurs only sporadicaly on Windows machines, I don't know what causes it exactly, but I think it has something to do with SDL. Perhaps I should mention it in the guide.

Networking is OK when you use slirp networking, and it's easy to set up. But you can also use the Basilisk ethernet driver, if you want.
Setup instructions for slirp are in this guide: http://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/she ... line_guide
It's best not to use the internet explorer or netscape that come with OS 9. You can use classila or netscape 7 for reliable browsing.

Best,
Cat_7

I added that into the guide... thanks for the recommendation. I also added a note about the limits of the hard disk iage creation, which was mentioned in that forum topic but (again) not in the guide.

Thanks to you for the response and for improving the guide! You sure make retrocomputing really modern and "oiled"!
Unfortunately though, I think I wouldn't be able to make a perfect OS9 on the windows machine, since it seems that the driver "cdenabler.sys" corrupts the windows installation. I'll try again without it, thanks again.

Merry Christmas & best wishes from a fan of yours.

Of course, until somebody is willing, determined, and 'gung-ho' enough about solving SS's issues with OS9, I cannot stress enough how almost effortless it was to get networking working properly under OS8.6. I also happen to be running SS under Vista 32-bit.

And somebody else correct me if i'm wrong, but I think I saw somewhere else that the CD enabler.sys thing doesn't work for 64-bit versions of Windows.... right? If that isn't already bolded out on the guide, it might as well be.

Hi,

It seems the CD driver works in 64-bit systems when placed in \Windows\SysWOW64\drivers. I added that to the guide.
EDIT: only the error messege is prevented when you place the driver in the folder mentioned above. The driver itself doesn't work.

Best,
Cat_7

Well, guess what, the driver issues are probably due to the OS running on an external USB drive 8O
Rule n°1: If you are running windows, do it as it's meant to be done...
