Hi, I'm new and finally got Sheepshaver for windows up and running through an old build.

I haven't been able to run any applications saying the disk "MacUltimate" isn't found. I now at the moment can't use Stuffit, Script editor, or even SimCity!

Can someone help me? I'm trying to make maps with forge from the Marathon Trilogy, a classic, but if I can't run any applications, I doubt I can run that.

PS: I also can't get my internet to run. I don't even know if there's a browser... I set it up using the guide, but nothing...

Hi, and welcome!

What windows version are you running? is 32 or 64 bit?
How do you transfer programs into SheepShaver? Do you use the My Computer link on the Mac OS desktop?

If you are using cd-rom images of the programs you want to run, you can add them to the volumes list in the preferences editor, and they should show up on the Mac OS desktop. Install from them onto your Mac OS disk and leave the cd-rom image in the volumes list. Then start the programs from the Mac OS disk.

Best,

Ok, it's 32 bit, and I tried using my computer to transfer files, but they didn't want to work. I'm starting to think my files (forge, anvil) might be add ons to the game (Marathon).

Yes, from the start I left the cd rom images in the volume preferences. It wouldn't want to run without it staying.

EDIT: Ok, they're both programs.

Hi,

When you downloaded the Mac specific files in windows and use the My Computer option, then you get corrupted files that will not run.

Please try to get your internet working. In Mac OS 9, internet explorer is included.
Use the preferences editor to set networking to "slirp" and use the TCP/IP control panel in Mac OS to set DHCP as method for getting an IP address. That should make the internet work.
If not, then use the settings recommended here:
http://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/she ... line_guide

When you got networking and internet going, then please download the program files you are trying to run again.

Best,
Cat_7

I already have the internet set up. I just can't find any browsers. If it's suppost to be under applications, then it's not there.

EDIT: The programs are in stuffit format, but I can't even run stuffit because of that "MacUltimate" error.

Hi,

Have you installed a complete Mac OS from a normal install CD? Or have you used an image from the internet? If so, then perhaps the browser is not installed? Browsers should be installed (in Mac OS 9) in the folder called "Internet" on the Mac OS hard disk.

For you information: I downloaded Marathon 2 and the forge and anvil applications. They do run in SheepShaver.

Best,

I downloaded Mac OS 9 off the internet, and there is no internet folder. I can't open up the hard disk because it's in .hfv format.

PS: Thanks for letting me know that Marathon 2, forge, and anvil work with Sheepshaver.

EDIT: I opened up the disk while in sheepshaver and found no folder. It claims I do have Internet Explorer, and when I click "network browser", I still get the "MacUltimate" error.

Hi,

Please copy the content of your sheepshaver_prefs file here. The file is in your SheepShaver folder in Windows.
Perhaps we can find the error related to MacUltimate.

As for not having a Internet folder on the Mac OS disk: please try to find an universal install disk for Mac OS 9.0 (like the one on the macintoshgarden) website. The disk image is on page 7 (it shows an orange 9 on it).
It seems to me it is best to start a fresh install.

Best,

Ok, so I got the Macintosh Garden install disk, and it only gives me the option to restart on bootup. I forget the message, since I'm on a different computer now, but I'll look at it again later.

Also, how do you link files to a post? I don't see anything that sounds related to that.

Oh , that problem .

You have to lock the disk in your host system . If writing is enabled , MacOS will think that it is a copied disk .

You cannot upload a file into a post . You have to upload the file into a file server , such as Rapidshare , and then post the link here .

Hi,

I meant for you to paste the contents of the prefs file in your reply.

Now I can't open sheepshaver at all. I downloaded the macintosh garden disk, and now no matter what file I use, it doesn't work. I get the same message as last time. I have a feeling that I'm gonna try another build because this one was old in the first place, and the thing doesn't even open up anymore.

(1) Please copy in the contents of your preferences file .
(2) Maybe you should find a disk named MacUltimate , or rename a disk like your hard disk into MacUltimate .

In method 2 , I think it'll either give a new error about a new file , or stop asking for the disk . Either way , keep tracking down , renaming and creating until the problem stops .

But I suggest pasting the preferences file here and we can continue .

How can I copy the contents of the preferences file if I can't even use Sheepshaver anymore? It's completely locked up and unusable.

Hi,

The OP is using Windows!

Please look in your SheepShaver folder. There you'll find a file named SheepShaver_prefs. Open it with Notepad, select the content and copy/paste that in your reply.

Best,

Ok,

Edit the SheepShaver_prefs file with notepad and change the line:
"enableextfs false" to "enableextfs true" (this will give you access to your windows drives later on, when SheepShaver runs)
Save the file.

-Is the file OS9.img the cd rom image you downloaded from the macintosh garden? If so, make sure it is write protected: Right click the file and under properties/attributes select "read only".

Does your SheepShaverGUI.exe work?
-If so, then go to the volumes tab, click Create, enter "2000" for the size and "MacOS9" for the name of a new hard disk file. It will take a short while before the new file is created. The name will show up in the volumes list in the GUI.
-Still in the GUI: remove the volume with the name macos9.hfv from the volumes list: select the file and click Remove. (the file will not be erased from your windows disk, so if there is anything on there that you need later, it will still be available to be added to the volumes list in the GUI.)

Start SheepShaver. It will ask you to initialize the new disk you made. Give it a name, and choose Mac OS extended for type.
You will now have booted from CD-image. Once at the desktop, start the Mac OS installer from the CD-image and install a full Mac OS 9 to the new hard disk. After install, quit Mac OS by selecting "special/shut down" and restart SheepShaver. It should now boot from the new hard disk. Close the Configuration Assistant when it starts.

Let's go further from there.

Best,
Cat_7

Ok, so I edit the preferences and saved, made the hardfile 2 gigs, but sheepshaver doesn't even show up. It just gives me the run button and no window for sheepshaver pops up.

OS9.img wasn't the cd rom image from Macintosh Garden. Mac OS 9 Retail.toast is. I edit the preferences so it would map out to that file. Mac OS 9 Retail.toast has "Read Only" set.

Hi,

If I understand correctly, you now have two volumes in the volumes list:
-Mac OS 9 Retail.toast
-The 2Gb hard disk

The GUI expects the SheepShaver application to be called SheepShaver.exe Is that the case in your situation?
Also, you can use the GUI to make settings and click Start. If your sheepshaver is not called sheepshaver.exe, you can then manually start the actual sheepshaver application, whatever it's name.

Best,
Cat_7

Yes, it's not called SheepShaver.exe. I tried using the GUI and sheepshaver itself, but now it's starting to give messages like "Cannot map RAM: No error" which I saw something about somewhere, and "could not find executable" or something like that.

Hi,

A least we are getting somewhere ;-) It would be handy to name your SheepShaver application SheepShaver.exe. That way it can start when you click Start in the GUI. I'm now assuming you did that.

The cannot map ram error is caused by some other application(s) running on your system, taking up the same memory SheepShaver wants to use. Please try to shut down other programs. This is best done after a fresh system start.

Then use the GUI to set your SheepShaver memory to 128 Mb or 64 Mb and click Start.

Best,
Cat_7

Oh, sorry. I've been busy.

I did change it to SheepShaver.exe, but still wont start. It also doesn't run at 64 or 128 mb of ram, only 512, but right now doesn't start. I closed all my application hogs and others, but still wont run.

The error I get is "cannot find executable"

Make sure SheepShaver.exe and SheepShaverGUI.exe is in the same folder .
If that doesn't work , apply settings through the manual preferences file and then run the SheepShaver executable .

Ok I'm back. Took some computer classes (with macs, but OS X ones) and did some other stuff, and finally ready to get sheepshaver working again.

I looked back in the folder, and both the GUI and executable are in the same folder. Also, is the manual preferences file "SheepShaver_prefs"? If so, what do I need to change?
