Hey all,

Amazing resources here! I can't believe what can be accomplished with the guides. Many thanks.

I've done full installations of Basilisk II, SheepShaver and Basilisk142, but I haven't achieved perfection yet for Escape Velocity (Classic and Override) in Windows 7. I'd like to use SheepShaver because I have a retail OS 9 CD. SheepShaver is also much more stable for me. The game runs almost perfectly, after I slow down the Game Speed within EV.

My problem is this: in full screen I have some distracting color issues. It sort of looks like the game is running in less color than it should, even though it's set to the standard 256 colors. I've tried turning off themes and compatability settings in Win 7, every conceivable resolution setting, forced 256-bit color, different ROMs, etc. The color issue goes away every time when I run windowed. I can't really run windowed unless I squint at everything, my native resolution is a gargantuan 2048 by 1152.

Aside from getting a lower resolution monitor, so I can run it windowed, any tips for fixing color in full screen?

Edit: Same issue happens in 7.5.5.

Hi,

You can try to run in Windowed mode but set the size of the window to the maximum of your screen. You can enter numbers in the GUI, you don't have to stick with the pre-defined values.

Best,

Thanks for the response Cat_7.

I've tried that as well, and the type is still very small. Although, it is really neat to see the entire planetary system at once. :o I also get a fatal crash -7 after quitting EV in full screen mode. So if it comes down to stability and color, I may learn to squint!

Hi,

This older Basilisk 143 build was created specifically to run EV Nova. Perhaps it can help you?

You can also run full screen in lower resolution than your native resolution. Of course, with current monitors, your image will get more or less blurred.

Best,

Thanks for the suggestion Cat_7. I tried build 143 again with the same result; I think I have a clue about what is happening...

There are some small differences between the Mac OS 8-bit color palette and Windows, in particular shades of grey, which are used abundantly in Escape Velocity.

Interestingly, I took a screenshot from within Mac OS 7.5.5 while full-screen with Basilisk II. When I opened the screenshot in Windows, it looked perfect. But while I was taking the screenshot, it was displaying the (inaccurate) Windows palette as seen below. So the emulator seems to be working perfectly in this regard.

Here is an example of what I'm seeing:

I am thinking this is not correctable, but tell me if I'm wrong.

Hi,

That build 143 uses a different, more complex, BasiliskGUI to make settings. Perhaps using a different graphics engine for windows can help. Do you have that GUI? It is included in the Basilisk 142 download. Please look under the screen section.
Otherwise, I wouldn't know how to be of any more assistance.

Best,

Thank you, it worked perfectly! If anyone else needs them here are my settings:

- set resolution to 1024 x 768 in Windows
- Screen type: Windows GDI
- Screen width: Full Screen
- Screen height: Full Screen
- Colors: 256 color palette (8-bit)

Bravo!
