How do I burn Apple_Mac_OS_7.6_CD to a CD on my Win7 PC?

About BasiliskII, a 68k Mac emulator for Windows, MacOSX, and Linux that can run System 7.x through MacOS 8.1.

How do I burn Apple_Mac_OS_7.6_CD to a CD on my Win7 PC?

Post by nemo_007 »

Question above might look stoopid. Did not find reply yet.
I downloaded Apple_Mac_OS_7.6_CD from Macintosh Garden (in a zip)
Did extract from zip :
._Apple Mac OS 7.6 CD.image (1K)
Apple Mac OS 7.6 CD.image (238.366K)

I can see these are images I should burn on a CD first and then install 7.6 from CD.

I run Basilisk II (2005) under Windows 7 - 64 Bits nicely. Am now in 7.5.5.
I have no clue how to now burn these images on my native CD reader/writer.
And what is the 1K file for ?

Do I need a toaster?

Help or pointers welcome.
TY!

Edited:

1) My bad. I just saw I can burn from HFVExplorer..... trying now.
Can't make it simple he? We came a long way indeed.
Did create a volume. Copied CD images on it.
Then asked HFV to burn it. Got "HP burner is not installed correctly". Wth?
What HP Burner ?

2) Dragged images files under Windows 7 to my CD-R. Burned them. Ejected CD
- Started BasiliskII - Closed CD - Saw it appear on desktop and could open content and see images files. When clicked on I get a pop up because Basilisk does not know what to do with them.

Catch 22.

Is there a Basilisk II MANUAL somewhere that explains more than the install ?

Solution and explanation:

The zip file was created on OS X, which puts the metadata that would normally go into an HFS+ volume into a separate "." datafile. These files are useless on non-OS X OSes and non-HFS+ filesystems. So you can ignore that file, as it doesn't really provide anything (other than maybe a custom icon?) for .image files.

Next up: you don't need to burn anything. Just ensure the .image file is locked, and add it to the list of volumes for Basilisk II (at the top). Then BII will boot off of this as if it was a CD, and you can begin the upgrade process from 7.5.5 to 7.6.1.

TY adespoton! By "locked" I assumed you meant "read only" under Windows. Which I did set it to. I fired the BII GUI tool and added the image file (did delete the "." one).
Then started. Volume was mounted and I just finished a update to 7.6.1.

Wooot!

Well it did still not solve my AZERTY keyboard issue as it show same limited choices as before, but at least I am in 761 now and understand better how to deal with CD images.
Which may open me the way to install Myst after all. :-)

If you don´t mind "wasting" physical CDs for archival reasons or else,
IMGBurn for Windows is the way to go.

I burned the Mac Anthology 99 to DVD with IMGBurn/W7 as I like to have a physical copy to hold in my hands. :)

Last year I copied all my CDs and DVDs over to my 10TB drive array, after finding that some of my old CDs were starting to bit rot :(

I no longer even have an easily accessible DVD/CD drive*, and rarely miss it.

* My G4 Minis have them, but aren't somewhere physically accessible at the drop of a hat.

An extra question.

I already downloaded two CD images for my next updates to 8.1 and then 9.x my ultimate goal for Basilisk II.

I see in zip those have a .toast extension.
Am I toasted?

How do i proceed with those? Sorry if dummy question.

.toast is an extension for images created by Roxio Toast. You can treat them like .iso images. You can add the images to the volume list in the GUI. They will then show up on the BasiliskII desktop. Make sure you label the image files read only in the Windows host system. In BasiliskII they will then be recognised as the original (read-only) CDs.

Exactly what cd images did you download, updaters or full system installers? Updaters can only be used to update 8.0 to 8.1, 8.5 to 8.6, 9.0 to 9.0.4. If you want to update from 7.6.1 to 8.1 (or 8.0), you will need a full MacOS 8.1 (or 8.0) installation CD (or image of such a CD). But why would you want do that? MacOS 7.6.1 is considered a more stable OS version than 8.0/8.1.

Note that MacOS 8.1 is the latest version that can be installed in BasiliskII. If your "ultimate goal" is MacOS 9, better set up SheepShaver with MacOS 9.0 or 9.0.4.

ok Ty Ronald.

Yes I did download both CD .toast for OS8.0 and OS9.0

I was not aware, having been in a Windows tunnel for 25 years (pun intended) that OS 8.0 was less stable than 7.6.1. I will then stop at than one for BII.

Did install SheepShaver in another directory and will use that OS 9.0 CD for it.

As for Azerty keyboard to avoid 24 bit to tear his last hair I will make still another directory and install the old BII and see what happens there.

When all that fun is over I may look at Mac OS/X. But later.

TY all for a great support!
