| Which is the last version of QuickTime that will work on SheepShaver? Yesterday I tried version 6.0.3, which I think is the last one made for OS 9, and it installs, but then it's unable to display the sample movie clip and image that come with it. Have I done something wrong or is it just incompatible with SS? |

You best try version 4.1.2 or (if you need it) 5.0. More recent versions do not work or work only partially. Depends also on the version of SheepShaver and possibly on the used ROM file.
I have QT 4.1.2 running fine in MacOS 9.0.4 in the latest unofficial build of SheepShaver for MacOSX. |

QT 2.x, 4.1.2 and 5.0.3 will work in SS for win;
QT 2.x, 4.0.3 and 5.0.3 will work in SS for OSX.
and whether will it work also depends on the ROM you used. |

| I've trying to locate where I might download QT 5.0.3 from with no luck. Provided this doesn't violate forum policy, can anyone provide a reliable link? Thanks. |

Thank you for the links, Ronald.
I used the 5.0.5 installer to first uninstall the old QT 4 that came with OS 9.0.4. Then I installed 5.0.5 and it seems to work, although the sample picture (viewed with PictureViewer) that comes with the application is displayed in very strange colours. It looks like a green stereogram.
Thanks anyway. |

| An uninstall is only needed when going back to an earlier version of QuickTime and should be done with the installer for the to be removed version. I thought you had 6.0.3 installed, that's what you wrote yesterday. The QuickTime 6 installation should have been uninstalled by the QuickTime 6 installer. For upgrading no uninstalling is needed. |

| I now tried QT 5.0.5 on MacOS 9.0.4 in SheepShaver. Does not work properly for me, so I uninstalled QT 5.0.5 and again installed QT 4.1.2. |

Yes, yesterday I tried with 6.0.3, but I restored my SS OS 9 disk image, which came with QT 4.0.1. I've just gone back to it, because it seems to work better on my system than version 5.0.5. I am currently downloading version 4.1.2 and will check it out tomorrow.
Thanks for all the advice. |

OK, I've just tried QT4.1.2. It doesn't even install. I've tried four times, and it always kills SS when accessing the "Unix" disk. I'll just keep 4.0.1.
Thanks anyway. |

| You should not install from the 'Unix' disk, or use any files on that volume. Use the shared folder/Unix volume for moving files between MacOS and OSX only. Copy the file to another volume in SheepShaver first. |

Yes, that's exactly what I do, but, even so, QT4.1.2 didn't install when the installer on the OS9 desktop tried to access the Unix disk for some reason (I guess it was tring to locate a QT installation there that might need updating?). |

Maybe you have been caught by a peculiarity of the old MacOS that you have forgotten? Each volume has its own desktop and the desktop you see is all those desktops together. When you move a file from the "Unix" volume onto the desktop, the file is still on the Unix volume (in fact in the invisible "Desktop" folder on that volume). To copy a file to another volume you must actually drop it onto that other volume's icon or onto a folder on that volume. |

Thank you for making me aware of one of the peculiarities of OS 9. It's not, as you've so kindly indicated, that I'd forgotten. I'd never known that. I switched to OS X from Windows. I only used Classic now and then.
It's always good to learn new (and old) things. |

I downloaded QT 4.1.2, QT 5.0.5 and QT 6.0.3 directly under SheepShaver running Netscape 7. I tested QT 6.0.3 which gives bad result, so I desinstalled it using the installer and I removed some files manually.
I tested QT 5.0.5, same result, so I tested QT 4.1.2 which works fine.
I can place a wallpaper, and Netscape start-up box is well displayed, which wasn't the case with QT 5.0.5 and QT 6.0.3.
I have a MacBook Pro 17 inches Santa Rosa (bought in December 2007) running Mac OS X 10.5.6 Leopard, and I use SheepShaver 2.3H 090319 in full screen mode (1650 by 1050 pixels). |
