E-Maculation News: August 2005

Updates? Okay!

Fellows: Still in Asia. I want to start throwing updates on here again. But for real this time! Stay tuned for that. (I just sort of haven't been paying attention. Out of the loop!)

Ardi: The End

Last month, the following message was posted on the main ARDI page:

“I, Clifford Matthews, am ARDI's founder, and I have been doing non-emulation consulting since 2002. Although ARDI has had several employees and contractors earlier in its life, Im the only one left. During the last few years, I've been an expensive consultant on projects that are completely unrelated to Macintosh emulation. As such, although I intended to tie up ARDI's loose ends, I instead spent my time meeting my client's needs during the work week and being a father and husband instead of doing ARDI work on my off hours. Apple's switch to Intel processors and their pending retirement of the Classic environment has prompted me to dust off the Syn68k and Executor source code and see if theres a useful role for it in the future. Since Mac OS X is a much better operating system than Classic, and since Mac OS X on Intel will support Carbon applications, I don't see a need for our technology running on future Apple Intel hardware. There are new Executor binaries in our download section. You may use the serial number “99991004” and the authentication key “bk6pu9ez6pfus”. The key expires at the end of December, 2006. By that time, all of ARDI's software technology will probably either be sold or released under an Open Source license. There is no technical support available for Executor.”

Sad, I think. All of the old commercial emulators are finished now, if I understand things correctly.

PearPC "Elite" Build (Aug 4)

Prasys released a new build in his PearPC line today. The features are as follows…

  • Improved Cuda Patch
  • Improved Right Mouse Support
  • New AltiVec Code (CPU_PVR) Support, AltiVec (G4)
  • Scroll Whell Support
  • Auto Redraw Function
  • ISO CD Fix by guru3
  • 2nd IDE Controller
  • Remote Desktop fixes
  • Tiger compatible
  • New ?쏱anic Message??
  • CRC32 (Networking) fix

It was originally stated that this build would not work with anything less than Mac OS 10.4, but there are many reports (including my own) of it working with other OS 10.x versions. I can personally vouch for Mac OS 10.2. You can download this build from Prasys' download page at http://prasys.skidsoftware.com/downloads.htm

OSx86

Wired magazine is running a report of “a way to bypass a chip designed to prevent the Mac OS from running on non-Apple PCs, which are often cheaper than Macs.” Hackers are using OSx85, which “is designed to run on Apple Computer's next generation of hardware, which some call “MacIntels” and others “MacTels” because the machines will run on Intel microprocessors rather than the PowerPC processor used in current Macs.”

Get the scoop over here.
