Re: Working on bin/cue support in SheepShaver

For the Alone in the Dark games, also make sure to copy the "Video" folder into the game's folder! It's not very well documented, but here's the description from the second game's manual, which remains true for the third: Incidentally, I cannot get this to work with Alone in the Dark 2 (f...

Re: Working on bin/cue support in SheepShaver

Yes, I think this is a multi-faceted issue. The starting point is that I track down some original media so I can experiment with different rips + use of physical media directly. I am dual booting an Intel Mac with Windows 11 + Sonoma, so I can thoroughly test under each environment. The searching of...

Re: Working on bin/cue support in SheepShaver

I am going to experiment with FWB CD-ROM Toolkit, as well as various applications that can mount CD images, such as Toast. On the subject of how the CDs are ripped in the first place.. Isn't the fact that the Apple CD Audio Player can see (and play) the audio tracks a sign that, at least at the OS l...

Re: Working on bin/cue support in SheepShaver

And after all that .. when playing Alone in the Dark 3, I can see that the "CD audio" option is still greyed out and unavailable. You can only select between low and high quality music, both referring to the digitized tracks stored on the data partition, not the Red Book audio tracks. Whil...

Re: Working on bin/cue support in SheepShaver

Yes - that has fixed it for me too. I had no idea that BIN/CUE support was not enabled by default, and I have been building SS/BII from source.

Glad we got to the bottom of that. Thanks to everyone who contributed.

Re: Working on bin/cue support in SheepShaver

Here are the files re-compressed in Windows-compatible zip format: https://ronaldpr.home.xs4all.nl/emaculation/Alone_in_the_Dark_3.zip Thanks. Whatever is causing this, it would appear to have nothing to do with the nature of the zip file format. With this download, I am experiencing the exact same...

Re: Working on bin/cue support in SheepShaver

Disabled CD-ROM driver or not, the issue is that in neither MacOS 7.5.5 or 9.0.4 will this work for me - I do not even see a data partition showing up. In summary, with CD-ROM enabled but not pointing to the real CD drive: 1. Pointing to cue file as "cdrom" in 7.5.5 - message saying the di...

Re: Working on bin/cue support in SheepShaver

If I disable the CD-ROM driver, when I try to mount the cue sheet as "cdrom" nothing happens - no disc or message shows up when I start MacOS 7.5.5. If I mount it as a "disk", then I get the error message about the disk being unreadable and needing to be formatted. This is my pre...

Re: Working on bin/cue support in SheepShaver

That's... odd. Seems like maybe we need to look at the CUE handling code a bit more. As another experiment, what happens if you change it to MODE2 instead of MODE1? Keep the 2352 block size, as that's standard for CDs. I suspect that the issues here are specific to MODE1 layout with RedBook Audio t...

Re: Working on bin/cue support in SheepShaver

Hmm... so one MODE1/2352 track and 60 RedBook Audio tracks. What happens if the CUE is truncated to only list the first track? If you mean delete all lines below the first track, loading the cue sheet takes me to the desktop but shows nothing but greyed out items in the menu bar, with no dialogue w...

2. Where did you get the files? I can download them, decompress in macOS and again zip them in Windows-compatible zip format. The CUE sheet referenced above is from the third disc of the "Alone in the Dark Trilogy" at the Macintosh Garden. I am not sure if that would work, but definitely ...

This is a link to the actual CUE sheet. I notice the spacing looks different when you look at the listings within Notepad.

Re: Working on bin/cue support in SheepShaver

Reading some of the posts above, I get the impression that nothing is going to make those BIN/CUE rips on Macintosh Garden work, due to the nature of how they were ripped in the first place off the original media. If they were ripped using a Mac, it seems they are encoded in a way that renders them ...

Re: Working on bin/cue support in SheepShaver

Interesting point about the zip archive issue. The files I tested were extracted from a zip file which had OSX files inside it. I am going to test this by burning a CD from the bin/cue pair in Windows. I will report back. I presume I could also try directly mounting a physical CD. UPDATE: So I tried...

Re: Can Basilisk II work with System 6.0.7 with a Mac II ROM?

The default build of Basilisk II has the 6.0.7 support disabled. You have to re-enable it and compile it yourself before the SE (not IIci) ROM will boot it. This version, IIRC, will not boot anything higher than 7.5.5. See https://www.emaculation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10905 for more details. Of...

Re: SheepShaver for Windows

Looking good with the above build of SheepShaver for Windows .. it appears to have eliminated graphical corruption, in all the games I have tested to date. That is apart from the Dark Forces slow-down issue, which I suspect has a separate cause. Something else, possibly related, is that QuickTime mo...

Can Basilisk II work with System 6.0.7 with a Mac II ROM?

I have been experimenting with some earlier versions of the MacOS and managed to get System 6.0.7 working in Mini vMac emulating a Macintosh II, however there are quite a few limitations with that emulator when compared to Basilisk II. For example, I cannot run the program I want because it needs an...

Re: Working on bin/cue support in SheepShaver

Despite slow progress, in the midst of testing I discovered that Mac OS 9 can actually load the native driver (perhaps due to changes like embracing digital audio ). I have put up a test build which should support both bin/cue mounting and CD playthrough with Mac OS 9 guests: https://github.com/spo...
