Re: Classic Environment vs Emulation.

As an update - I'm running Jaguar 10.2 on the iBook after having quickly tried puma 10.1 (too buggy) and I'm using Firefox 2.0 as browser. Despite being last updated on 2005, it works decisively better than Classilla (latest version from 2013): several more pages are rendered correctly, https works ...

Re: Classic Environment vs Emulation.

Wow, that's quite an impressive collection ! The icons themselves are really a nice touch. I agree the ROI on targeting PPC mac is nearly 0; the problem is (I know it is extreme paranoia) if someone is targeting specifically you: using and old and insecure system makes the job pretty easy. As an (od...

Re: Classic Environment vs Emulation.

I'm not a big expert on the subject of internet security, but relaying on what is called "security through obscurity" is never a good idea :) What I'm most afraid of are websites which might still support old protocols to send sensitive data; old encryption protocols are easy prey of moder...

Re: Classic Environment vs Emulation.

Classilla on the iBook is rather slow, scrolling a page is far from being smooth and loading time is not exactly instantaneous. Moreover is fails to render page on "modern" website such as tripadvisor (but I have to admit I changed the user agent to a standard desktop as the mobile version...

Re: Classic Environment vs Emulation.

A couple of weeks ago I bought an iBook (snowwhite dual USB with a G3 500 MHz) and I have been running Mac OS 9.22, just for fun. Surprisingly, the iBook is much faster than Classics on the Mini, even with CPU intensive applications like doom, quake, duke nukem, the iBook leaves classics in the dust...

Re: Erratic mouse in pool games

Update on the issue: I found another game which has the same issue (alley 19 bowling, no less) and it works on both BII and SS. The issue is present with both emulators so it must be something common to both SS and BII. I tried the game in BII on a windows pc and, to my surprise, the mouse works per...

Re: SDL 2.0

On my MBP running El Cap, I have every major point release of Mac OS from System 0.85 through 9.0.4 running in parallel I guess that requires sheepshaver, i do not know of any other emulator capable of running MacOS 9 but also have every OS X version from 10.1.5 through 10.11.4 (current) running, w...

Re: SDL 2.0

I'm not asking anyone to do anything . I was just wondering if anyone has ever considered upgrading SDL library to version 2. Moreover I honestly think the reason these projects are not advancing is the lack of interests from the user base. There is a lot of interest in emulating arcade machine, gam...

Re: Classic Environment vs Emulation.

After playing with Classics on Tiger I am a bit disappointed: it is a fresh install no extra extension or control panel but OS 9 keeps hanging with CPU spiking at 100%. It happens with full screen games (e.g virtual pool) and that is somehow expected, but it also happens with harmless old games (lif...

Re: Classic Environment vs Emulation.

I will try anyway the ISO and see what happens (hoping not to brick the mini) As expected the ISO does not boot on the mini: just a grey screen in place of the boot progress bar ... As for classic, it is indeed a full Mac OS 9.2.2 installation (with bundled applications): on older mac, the os 9 fol...

Re: Classic Environment vs Emulation.

There's a modified OS 9 iso in Macintosh Garden and a how-to guide in ThinkClassic. I saw the thread on Think Classic but so far nobody was able to boot OS 9 on a Mac Mini G4 ... They succeeded on slightly older machines, but the best you can get with a Mac Mini is a grey screen ... I will try anyw...

Re: Classic Environment vs Emulation.

Uhm, are you sure about the 4 GB memory support ? It's the 1st gen of Mac Mini back from 2005: it was originally sold with 256 Mb and Mac Os X 10.3, but when I bought mine (July 2005) it was upgraded to 512 Mb and Mac OS X 10.4. In later years I swapped the ram module and plugged in a Pc-2700 1 Gb a...

Classic Environment vs Emulation.

Today I resurrected my old Mac Mini (1st gen from 2005, PPC G4 1,25 GHz, 1 GB RAM, ...) and installed a fresh copy of the original OSX 10.4; updated to latest release (10.4.11) and then installed the Classic Environment. This mac does not boot in Mac Os 9 (even hacking the ROM it does not boot anywa...

Re: SDL 2.0

Thanks for the info. For work I write software for an embedded controller based on a freescale PPC controller and the memory address 0x0 is valid due to the lack of memory protection in the OS. Any null pointer results in an operation on the memory stored at 0x0 (typically boot stuff). Any sensible ...

Re: SDL 2.0

It's worth a try, but SS and BII are also both obsoleted source, and depend on things that are quickly becoming deprecated. What are those obsolete dependencies ? I see the windows build depends on drivers which are quite obsolete, but the osx build is quite clean... thanks for any info. bye Enrico

SDL 2.0

I have not checked nor SS neither BII source code, but I was just wondering if anyone has ever investigated the feasibility of migrating the two emulators from SDL 1.2.15 to 2.0.x. This would help extend the life of both SS and BII as SDL 1.2.x is obsoleted and no longer maintained and might stop wo...

BII mac OS 7.6.1 or 8.1

I do not know if this question has already been asked, but is there any reason to prefer MacOs 8.1 to 7.6.1 ? 7.6.1 is faster to boot, low in resources and I like more its simple (yet very modern) flat appearance. MacOs 8.1 ha surely a better software architecture, but does that translate in a highe...

Re: Erratic mouse in pool games

I tried both windowed and full screen modes with both the magic mouse and an ordinary usb logitech mouse: the result is the same, mouse movements are perfect with the UI, but as soon as I start playing pool it goes havoc. I think pool games require high precision mouse movement hence they are access...

Erratic mouse in pool games

Hi, Sheepshaver latest build, osx 10.11 and apple magic mouse 2; the mouse runs perfect in any games I tried so far with the exception of two pool games (virtual pool and ultimate pool): in both cases the movements of the table or the pool stick are erratic, jumping from side to side or rotating ran...

Yes indeed without FPU, math benchmarks are much slower (310 vs 1700 using 68LC040). Anyway frame rate of the game is more than enough and it is very smooth.
Maybe because the emulated mac is a hundred time faster than a 40 MHz 68K

Re: BII and 4K retina iMac

Thanks, for the info ! Actually switching to "low res mode" has fixed most of the issues: the UI is very sharp, mouse is faster and everything feels snappier. In Sheepshaver it is enabled by default and that explains the differences; I've read the thread dealing with various builds, but to...

BII and 4K retina iMac

I'm running latest Basilisk II OSX build on a 4K retina iMac with OSX 10.11 and so far so good. Running benchmarks show that the emulated mac is much faster that any 68k mac ever by several order of magnitude but the GUI is not as snappy as expected. Running in windowed mode (1024x768) the mouse is ...

Snow leopard Xcode can compile binaries only from 10.4 up; 10.3 is not supported. Given the incomplete sound emulation for Mac II, wouldn't it be better to compile vmac Mac II without sound support ? if sound support is enabled, every time an applications trys to reproduce a sound, vMac hangs. If so...
