Re: MAME Power Macintosh 6100 boots!
Thanks! That's a big info dump. I'm guessing I'll probably end up doing a built-in apprentice target because currently I can only run 7.1.2 and 7.5.0. 7.5.3/7.5.5/7.6.x all have issues. I haven't been able to find an 8.x CD that boots on a 6100, and I get identical results there in Dingus so I'm ...

Re: MAME Power Macintosh 6100 boots!
What's a bus width transformer? It allows adding NuBus slots to a Mac that only had one PDS slot? There can be 14 slots (1 to E - Apple documentation) but Apple usually only used a max of 6 slots (9 to E)?
MAME as an optimization stores the emulated machine's memory at the host endianness but ...

Re: MAME Power Macintosh 6100 boots!
In dev. I'm going to land the other PPC improvements soon (freeze for next release is Saturday) and likely the 030 and 040 PowerBook Duos.

Re: MAME Power Macintosh 6100 boots!
I have the video modes and the RAM sizing fixed locally. Both of those features are borrowed from the LC III which I already had emulated elsewhere.
I've also wired up a bus width transformer that allows compatible NuBus cards that we emulate to work so you can have a dual-head PowerMac.

Re: MAME 2023 Mac emulation updates
We've done some work with MAME's Lua engine to write a script that pokes the native mouse position into the Mac low memory globals, which gives the nice transparency. It works really well on some machines and pretty much not at all on others, depending on the type of ADB hardware involved. It should ...

Re: MAME 2024/2025 Mac emulation updates
On hardware, ScuzEmu lets the system directly see the files on the VFAT or exFAT-formatted SD card the SCSI emulator hardware is using. Normally you just put a hard disk or CD-ROM image on the card and the emulator presents it to the system as a hard disk or CD-ROM. ScuzEmu (the official BlueSCSI ...

Re: Clean room, or "dirty room" ROM replacements/emulators?
The Unitron ROM dumps I've seen are just copies of Apple's ROMs, including the 'Stolen from Apple Computer' icon. That's probably why the people involved don't want to go into coherent detail.

Re: MAME Power Macintosh 6100 boots!
The 7.1.2 version of the Power Macintosh CD works and can be used to install a 6100 from zero. This disc is "pwrmaccd" in the MAME software list library if you have that, otherwise it's pretty easy to find. Note that the resulting 7.1.2 hard drive will also boot a Quadra 700 (and probably other ...

Re: MAME Power Macintosh 6100 boots!
Just to clarify, there is some semi-working support checked in now. The big issue is that our PPC core wasn't reporting unrecognized instructions, it was just throwing a PPC illegal instruction exception silently. Installing MacsBug helped to figure out what was actually happening, and adding ...

Re: MAME 2023 Mac emulation updates
I don't think I've seen those other threads, but the primary issue was that the 601 still has some significant IBM POWER elements and instructions to it that we weren't supporting other than some of the MMU differences. SCSI worked perfectly first time once the 601 was doing more of what it was ...

Re: MAME 2023 Mac emulation updates
LOL, yeah, probably should've started a new thread about a year ago, and then again now :-)
A fun extra for the new year: the Power Mac 6100 now can boot and run 7.1.2 and 7.5.0. It's still quite a ways from where I'd recommend anyone actually use it, but it's progress.

Re: MAME 2023 Mac emulation updates
The CD audio emulation was made a lot more correct in 0.272 thanks to some documentation that recently leaked out of Apple France. It improved all the test cases I tried but there's always a chance of regressions. I'll check out Alone in the Dark, thanks!

Re: MAME 2023 Mac emulation updates
If you run MAME with the -cheat switch on, it enables CPU overclocking which increases the CPU speed without changing the machine's "real time" reference. Switch the keyboard mode to enable the MAME keys like Tab and so on, and hit ` to bring up the small list of slider, or press Tab for the full ...

Re: MAME 2023 Mac emulation updates
There are a couple of issues - the documentation is pretty sparse, the Sound Manager isn't in the SuperMario source tree that's floating around Github, and there's different behavior between the ASC, EASC, and the reduced-feature clones of them built into the various system chipsets. It works really ...

Re: MAME 2023 Mac emulation updates
Yes, there is known to be some weirdness with audio. It varies by which Mac and which System version how problematic it is which makes it a bit hard to track down. The misbehavior that's most likely to lead to a fix is that changing beep sounds in the control panel will sometimes freeze the system ...

Re: MAME 2023 Mac emulation updates
Is anyone currently working on the PPC code? It looks like DingusPPC may have some progress that could be a useful secondary reference here -- but what I'm really waiting for is a MAME reference implementation of the Mac ATi Rage 128, which will open up a bunch of opportunities in emulating turn ...

NFS has been shaky for me on macOS going back to like 10.12. I switched to mounting my server's SMB shares instead and it's both faster and more stable.

For emulating Apple I, II, ///, and 680x0 Macs on modern Macs (including Apple Silicon; I'm typing this on my brand new M3 Max and it's indeed scary fast), there's a friendly GUI called Ample that you can get from https://wiki.mamedev.org/index.php/Driver:Mac_68K

MAME 2023 Mac emulation updates
Lots of stuff happened this past year! MAME now supports all desktop 680x0 Macs with the correct ASICS emulated and show the correct Gestalt IDs except for the IIfx, Quadra 900/950, Macintosh TV, and the AV Quadras. (Quadra 700, 800, 610, 630, 650 all work and can run Mac OS 8.1). AppleSC CD-ROM ...

There's also an "official" setup guide for Mac in MAME now, which is up to date with the emulation changes over the last year or so.

You can definitely enable "thousands" and "millions" of colors in Mac models that support it in MAME. You can also have multiple video cards in machines with NuBus slots.

Re: MAME: Trying to Emulate System 6
There's been some, but they more or less stopped talking once they got things functioning. And that's fine, their primary focus is closer to how Basilisk and SheepShaver work than what we're doing so a lot of it doesn't really translate.
