The screenshots are Qemu running SheepShaver on plain old x86 gentoo (in windows). At the time the PowerPC emulation could only run a PREP PPC kernel from within linux. I haven't tried anything recently, but I think I will this weekend. PPC_Digger- yes, sort of like coLinux, I just meant to point ou...

Perhaps it may be possible some day, as Qemu's PowerPC port is developing nicely. Last I checked (a few weeks ago), PPC system emulation is just starting to take off, and can half boot OSX, and and half boot few PPC linux distros. I'd imagine if it can be made to boot a complete PPC linux distro, i...

Cherry OS is completely based on the PearPC code. In the demo video for Cherry OS, there a window that when Cherry is starting, flashes some red and yellow text. After trying to hit pause on it a few times, I found out that the text is the same that comes up when booting PearPC: 2 bootable partitio...

I've seen this as well, read the manual. I also saw a few posts on it in another forum where one guy apparently had a beta running for his company or something. He claimed about 1ghz G4 speeds with an Athlon 64 3400, which to me suggests slighly faster than PearPC. Another forum suggested it might b...

SheepShaver has run-time depth switching, so you can change the resolution within the client OS, and it will resize the window accordingly. I think the prefs file only sets what resolutions the client OS is allowed to use, but doesn't actually make the change. I'm not sure about SDL on OSX, but as f...

Nothing can replace a genuine MMU. Until there's a better way to shoulder the load of emulating an MMU, things probably won't improve a whole bunch. Sure, there's things that can be optimized in graphics, sound, etc, making things appear faster. But in actual processing, there's really not a terribl...

I was just playing with QEMU a bit more, and I dug up an OSX emergency boot disc. QEMU starts to boot up with it, I see the apple logo come up, and it loads all the drivers and such. It crashes right before Darwin starts to load up, with a message like this: Kernel version: Darwin Kernel Version 6.6...

it is a little hard for me to believe that a PPC emulator is working faster than a 68K one on a PC It's not running on a PC, it's running in OSX on a real mac. SheepShaver uses the native PowerPC processor when run on a real mac. There is no CPU emulation at all, hence the much better speed. I beli...

Be careful with your acronyms. PPC actually refers to PowerPC, the architecture. It does not officially refer to PearPC, the program. That said, I've been playing with QEMU quite a bit lately, and with version .6 they have make incredble progress over previous versions (at least, in terms of PPC). I...

This was a random thought I just had. I was reading a bit into some things here about using the GPU as something of a co-processor. Would it be at all possible, no matter how difficult, to send off the MMU requests to the graphics card, provided it had a powerful enough GPU? Let the CPU deal with th...

I did some reasing up on SFU, and apparently there are ways to get X running on it, either via a commercial product, or I've heard of the Cygwin variation of Xfree86 can run on SFU. I also see that SFU includes a number of the standard GNU tools, lke make, gcc, etc. However, given that it can be tri...

Networking via TUN with 2.6 series kernel!
Thanks to a few people's clever thoughts, it is now possible to get SheepShaver's networking working with a 2.6 kernel. How do I know it works? I'm posting this from IE 4.5 on MacOS9 in SheepShaver on my main Gentoo box running kernel revision 2.6.7. The basic info is here, but I'll try to get toget...

As far as I know, the QEMU project hasn't yet gotten a full powerpc OS to load. Last I heard they got the bootloader to run, but not much more than that. (If I'm mistaken, please correct me.) Once they do, I'd certainly look into this possibility. I've also seen that PearPC should be capable of runn...
