Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system

@Cat_7: wow that's a whole lot of information...! A quick skim of the MacsBugs manual around p. 111 suggests that the stack frame is managed manually (i.e. no fixed ABI layout) so I think the only way to extract the name of the library is to start adding breakpoints in relevant places and then manua...

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system

@LightBulbFun: thanks again for the information and video - getting this level of feedback from people who know about Macs is invaluble! After some digging around, I think I've worked out what the problem with the cdrom is - it seems Darwin only matches the cdrom under -M mac99 if it is attached to ...

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system

@LightBulbFun: thank you for the detailed information! Just to clarify some of these points: first off the bat is the OS9 openBIOS does not boot OS9 when you have QEMU PPC setup as a KVM VM on a real PowerPC machine (in my case a 970 PowerMac 7,3) Is what you're saying here is that the same OS 9 ima...

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system

@cat_7: thanks again for the more detailed debugging info! Hmmm I agree with @adespoton that something does appear different in the last couple of images. I did some testing with some USB patches yesterday at https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/qemu-devel/2015-12/msg03669.html and finally I can now g...

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system

I've upgraded to QEMU 2.5.0 recently (for Windows), but I don't have an awful lot of luck. I'm closer now, as I can reach the desktop, but it doesn't load the actual Finder. On Windows, the mouse now is more responsive. Using the test ISO (os92_test.iso) and the four OpenBIOS test binaries mcayland...

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system

@Cat_7: Thanks for testing this! Possibly something in test3/test4 gets them a bit further as the crash occurs in a different address space, but trying to guess progress from these logs is tricky. Is there any way of getting the output of SC7 included in the Macsbug log to find out for sure?

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system

OT probes ADB, or serial? or both? ref: "Open Transport Module Developer Note PRELIMINARY Revision 1.5d2" http://bebop.gtxent.com/OT_Module_Dev_Note.pdf Thank you so much for this link - this is a very useful document! Page 27 indicates that OT tries to register drivers on SCCA and SCCB a...

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system

Can't seem to find these OTRunPortScanners anywhere in the documentation, nor on the internet. The debugger has a nasty habit: you need to click the mouse to get Mac OS to boot with it, and then when you have booted with it (and nothing triggers it to automatically show), you have no mouse in the O...

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system

I have done extensive testing with MacOS 9.2.2 and QEMU. Most, if not all problems relate to Open Transport. It wreaks havok on QEMU, the OT extensions crash, and the OT code built into the System Suitcase's "wart" resource crashes the system as well. We will need assistance with the QEMU...

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system

Agreed, although I was thinking more of any developers who had written any kind of device driver or similar for MacOS 9. They should have the exact skills needed for debugging low-level crashes with MacsBugs, as well as having a good grasp of the toolbox API.

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system

I remember I read some stuff from a lady long ago about the Apple toolkit. It gave me the impression she was very knowledgeable. I don't recall her name, but I posted something here about it. I think she was in a QEMU mail list too. You're probably thinking of Natalia (Portillo). Sadly I don't thin...

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system

It is possible to get into MacsBugs if you mount the HFS OS 9.2 ISO and manually copy the MacsBugs extension into the Extensions folder so it can be enabled on the next reboot whilst holding CTRL. Unfortunately by the time that MacsBugs actually breaks it seems as if the stack has already become hop...

Re: GSOC qemu Boot Mac OS >= 8.5 on PowerPC system

Which version of QEMU are you using? Anything before 2.4 had a disk bug that would corrupt some unaligned DMA write requests, and this was exactly the symptom I would get before this was fixed.
