Re: Create SS .vm using Chubby Bunny
Definitely switch from Safari to Firefox or Chrome; SLS Safari is not safe to use for HTTPS, as it can be trivially broken by anyone who can get in the middle of the transaction, either via WiFi or by access to one of the intermediary routers. Do not use SLS Safari for banking. But other security t...

Re: Create SS .vm using Chubby Bunny
The exploits are in underlying technologies, that have since been patched by everyone else, but as SLS and SL aren't being patched anymore, they didn't get the fixes. This means that HTTPS, for example, is inherently broken on SL(S). BROKEN? How? Does that mean I'm at risk every time I do my online...

Re: Create SS .vm using Chubby Bunny
Still, deprecated means: will not be supported in future OS. Expect carbon applications to stop working in a future OSX version, could be as soon as 10.12. You never know, Apple will not tell so in advance. Well, I'm all set up! I have a copy of Mavericks to install, plus Parallels and Snow Leopard...

Re: Create SS .vm using Chubby Bunny
Carbon has been officially deprecated since 10.6. It still works, but the writing's on the wall. That's why Paul worked so hard on porting Mini vMac to Cocoa. Yes - officially. But apparently Apple insiders say Carbon is the equal of Cocoa in OS X (or was, until everything had to be 64-bit). Now of...

Re: Create SS .vm using Chubby Bunny
I think you've nailed it. The Finder was one of the last bastions of 68k code, and most of those resources were replaced with Carbon ones in OS 9. There were some issues with these through 9.1, although most were fixed between 9.0 and 9.0.4. I do remember the 9.1 finder being WAY more stable than 9...

Re: Create SS .vm using Chubby Bunny
I think that few people ever used Multi-Users in OS9. I must admit I never did, in 4 years of using OS9 (and that was 9.2.2) - I never saw the need. But it was interesting to see how "OS X" the login screen looks. Some Carbon software will run better (or will only run) with the latest ver...

Re: Create SS .vm using Chubby Bunny
Yes, I'm sure that's it. I've noticed that applications launch and generally run ok in OS9 (except that double clicking Sherlock 2 gives a message about needing a later version of system software, while launching it from the Apple menu opens it fine!). The main problems are : - sometimes when logged...

Re: Create SS .vm using Chubby Bunny
9 is also more stable for some software in SS (Word 5.1 anyone?); not sure what the reason is behind that. That is true! I did create the 9.0.4 virtualiser in order to run Word 5.1 (which also ran ok in Classic mode as I remember). I also noticed that the Users login window has the same horizontal ...

Re: Create SS .vm using Chubby Bunny
By the way - OS 9 is REALLY buggy compared with OS 8.6; that did surprise me! (Especially using multi-users mode).

Re: Create SS .vm using Chubby Bunny
It worked - now I have multiple users in the OS 9 .vm, so that's cool (and it works much like the OS X Users login, which I never saw in Classic before). I've already created a larger disk when I first set up the .vm - I use the Classic HD for the System Folder and everything the system needs and th...

Re: Create SS .vm using Chubby Bunny
The software was from http://www.gla.ac.uk/~gwm1h/macos9/ which is a whole page full of OS 9 related update software. The download was a .smi which I opened before copying to the Unix folder. The installer is Type = APPL, Creator = kajr <- this bit works, I click Accept, and choose where to install....

Re: Create SS .vm using Chubby Bunny
Update: • I've installed iTunes 2 (which only adds and plays MP3 not AAC - is that right?). • I tried Multi-Users, and downloaded the necessary software; I copied it to a folder in Unix, then to the Classic HD. During installation it is asking for a floppy disk 'Install Multiple Users' : that file i...

Re: Create SS .vm using Chubby Bunny
One further thing - the COI version of 9.0.4 is a very pared down, minimalist system. I still had the System Folder from the 9.2.2 Classic days on my iMac, so I copied over the File Synchronisation, Security and Keychain system extensions and control panels. Now those utilities are available in SS.

Re: Create SS .vm using Chubby Bunny
Success! I had to rename the file from .Classic.dmg to Classic.dmg as SS Preferences doesn't see invisible files, but once I'd done that, I had 9.0.4 up and running, and also Classilla as a web browser, which isn't really too bad at all. I reinstalled the abandonware Word 5.1a, and it runs fine. So ...

Create SS .vm using Chubby Bunny
I was advised to try OS 9.0.4 to see if it would resolve the Word 5.1a problem. However, as I don't have any OS9 install disks, I pulled the COI.app out of Chubby's Classic, and "Add"ed it when setting the SS preferences. Unfortunately, I still get the blinking '?' folder when double click...

Re: What else do I need to do?!
It's worth persisting, even when SheepShaver crashes "quite a lot". Eventually something minor will get it working. Oh, and it will crash sometimes when you restart the Mac OS or shut it down. I've never known it crash while the Mac OS is actually running though.

Re: ClarisWorks 3 and Word 5.1 cause SS (OS 8.6) to freeze
Have you tried running them under 9.0.4? I recall doing this with both CW3 and MSW5.1 on actual hardware back in the day. I didn't use 8.6 for long because I had all sorts of memory conflicts in it regarding third party extensions. Vanilla install was faster/cleaner than 9.0.4, but keeping the syst...

Re: SDL 2.0
On my MBP running El Cap, I have every major point release of Mac OS from System 0.85 through 9.0.4 running in parallel, but also have every OS X version from 10.1.5 through 10.11.4 (current) running, with the exception of 10.5.8, which is currently broken for me on both Intel and PPC (Intel I have...

Re: SDL 2.0
Any work that can be done to abstract the emulators from the underlying OS is beneficial in terms of longevity: nowadays CPU's are pretty fast and we can allow an intermediate layer if that helps making the code less OS-dependant ( basilisk II on my iMac runs hundred of times faster than a 68040 CP...

ClarisWorks 3 and Word 5.1 cause SS (OS 8.6) to freeze
This is not a real biggie, but I do like to open archived early versions of documents in the software they were created by. In Basilisk (OS 7.5.3) I can run: ClarisWorks 3 Word 5.1 FileMaker Pro 2 In SheepShaver (OS 8.6) I can run: FileMaker Pro 4 FileMaker Pro 2 AppleWorks 6 ClarisWorks 5 but CW3 a...

Re: Warning : SheepShaver versus Chubby Bunny
Thanks both. I actually have System 7.5 in Basilisk, and OS 8.6 in SS. I will either upgrade 8.6 to 9.0.4 or look at the business of creating multiple vm's.

Warning : SheepShaver versus Chubby Bunny
Don't use both! I had SheepShaver running quite nicely in Snow Leopard, OS 8.6 and all my archive documents, apps, folders and games. Then I had the idea to see if running OS 9.0.4 would give me more options (like the old Classic in Tiger) so I downloaded Chubby Bunny and (this bit was very easy) ra...

Re: WARNING: Norton Utilities and Sheepshaver
BTW 1: I occasionally need to force quit an application that stopped responding, but I hardly ever shut down my iMac and I only restart when needed for an update. I don't remember when I last needed to hard shut down my Mac. BTW 2: I do not want to scare you, but if something like what you describe...

Re: WARNING: Norton Utilities and Sheepshaver
Hi Ronald, thanks for replying. I have a Shared folder in my Home folder which is also the Unix. I actually ran NU against the Mac86 virtual disk which is in the SS folder - NU is on that same disk. This is weird then. I've never had to Force Quit all my OS X apps before, and though I've occasionall...
