Trying to get it to work with sheepshaver. You have any luck with Eureka? If so, how? This Eureka software was sold by Ultralingua back about 15 years ago. I used it as research tool in os 9. Now, zip. Please can anyone help? Thank you.

I have a 27"imac, build nov 2009, plenty of memory/ ram, and OS mavericks 10.9.5

Thank you

What issues are you experiencing getting it to run?

Hi, and thank you

I cant get Eureka to open

Which folder ought it be in? My other os 9 softwares work, exccept this one.
Do you use Eureka? There is a 'modern' equiv online but not as rich or deep as the original, plus it is open like wikipedia meaniong many of the entries are good, but some are just dead wrong. Id like to use my antique version. Thank you again

Where did you get your copy of Eureka? Is it complete with all files it needs?
How did you move it into the SheepShaver emulator?
Does the application file show its expected icon inside SheepShaver?

If you used the shared folder /Unix disk feature to move the files from the host into SheepShaver, note that applications will not run when still on the Unix disk and will also not run when dragged directly from the Unix disk onto the desktop (which will leave the file on the Unix disk desktop). Applications must be copied from "Unix" to the virtual HD.

Thank you RPR: ASppreciate your thoughts.

I bought my copy of eureka from ultralingua long ago.
I think it is complete with all files as I can run it on a different mac computer that has Snow Leopard os 10.6.

The imac im on now is running Sierra OS 10.12. Thats the one Im trying to get sheepshaver to open eureka. SHEEPSHAVER opens fine, and runs all my vintage software great. Except eureka

the icon for Eureka shows inside sheepshaver but there is a white circle around it with a slash.

Im thinking maybe re-import Eureka software on a flash drive from snow leopard to this imac with sierra and try again?

Download: http://archive.info-mac.org/edu/eureka-101.hqx

For category: Education

Name: Eureka Encyclopedia (OS X)
Version: 1.0.1

Eureka is Ultralingua's exhaustive lexicon of human understanding --
including concise entries on everything from the Big Bang to the End
of Days, from the Norman Conquest to the war in Iraq, from cave
paintings to ready-made art! Over 300,000 entries covering culture,
history, science, technology, and more, Eureka is the ultimate quick
reference.. This version is for Mac OS X (10.1-10.3+). Trialware
with a 30 day trial period; cost to purchase: $29.95.

Ultralingua homepage: http://www.ultralingua.com

This software will not run under OS 9 -- it's for OS X PPC. You need QEMU or PearPC and OS X PPC to run it, not SheepShaver. It should also run via Rosetta under OS X 10.6.

Nice finding adespoton!

As archangelista already found Eureka working with Snow Leopard, it may be an option to run the app in a virtual machine, e.g. Tiger Server to Leopard Server with VMWare Fusion.
Leopard Server with VMWare runs fine with my i5-2520m on a Mojave host, I did not try Catalina so far though.

I have 10.4 through 10.6 server and 10.6 client running under VirtualBox on Catalina. If they work under VirtualBox, they'll work under Fusion (with the potential exception of 10.6 client due to the Fusion license lockdown).

Good to know, thanks.
VirtualBox may be even easier to set up.

Depends; I had to jump through a few hoops and inject a few EFI codes to get those versions working. Also, VBox 5 totally broke 10.4 and 10.5 for me; I didn't get them working again until VBox 6 came out. So much so that I flirted with Parallels Desktop in the interim. That didn't end well.

Sorry for getting a little off topic here, but how to install Leopard Server in Parallels?
The installer itself does its work properly, but after restarting the VM and entering the S/N, the wheel keeps spinning saying: “Validating Serial Number”. I just spent a few hours trying to figure it out but couldn’t find anything helpful on the web.

Does anyone have a clue?

I did it by creating a vmdk of the CD, installing in VBox, then importing the VBox image to Parallels.

But if you got to the serial number, just do that part with the network interface disabled. Then registration won't kick in and have difficulty finding the non-existent server.

When I had the network interface enabled, after installation it said there is no internet connection and it didn’t work. Now with networking disabled it does work. So it wasn’t about internet connection but about connection to the Apple server.

Thank you!

EDIT:

My install DVD is OS X 10.5.0. I need to bring it to 10.5.8 but Combo updaters fail in the last step. I read a suggestion to use the Delta updater to 10.5.1 first and use the 10.5.8 Combo from there but that didn’t succeed either. Neither did the 10.5.3 Combo. So I thought of applying all the Delta updaters until I reach 10.5.8, but there’s no Delta for 10.5.2, only a Combo which also fails.

I’m out of ideas. Do you have any suggestions as to what else I could try?

EDIT 2:

Never mind. I’ve downloaded the 10.5.8 Combo updater again, this time from Macintosh Garden (the former download was directly from Apple). Now the update worked.
