unix wont refresh
Hello dear forum,
Thx first of all you guys made it possible to run the old mac systems on new software! Awesome!
I am trying to run old graphic programs on Mac OS 7.5.3. Basilisk II.
My problem is that the unix folder doesnt refresh the content when I put a file in the "shared" folder in my mac repository. It always shows the files that where in there during the installment of Basilisk.
Can anyone help me to get my files to unix?
Thx for any advice!
G, Niklas

Re: unix wont refresh
Put your files in there prior to running Basilisk II, and your problem is solved Going the other way, there aren't any problems (the host system can always see new files that are copied from the BII guest OS).
Re: unix wont refresh
Thank you very much for the quick reply!
I restarted my macbook and it started to work, awesome.

Re: unix wont refresh
There's a number of applications that will handle JPEGs; my favourite is Graphic Converter by Thorsten Lemke, because it also handles everything from PICT resources to JP2000 files and can convert between them all. Photoshop, of course, will also work if you've got the right version, as will JPEGView.
Nice thing is that Graphic Converter 5 and Graphic Converter 6 for Classic Macs are available for free from the developer. Registration details are available on the download page.
If you need something older, the Garden has versions 2, 3 and 4 as well.

Re: unix wont refresh
Let me throw in JPEG View.
Not the fastest renderer, but even working on my Mac II back in the days.

Re: unix wont refresh
Unfortunately, i can´t get any of the programs to run on my 7.5.3 :/
I either get an "error of type -192" or
"because the application program that created it could not be found"
I also can´t find an applications folder
(installation guide of GC tells me to put the GraphicConverter archive in the application folder)
Is there any trick to it?
Am I missing any installation files/processes?
(I got KPT bryce 1+2 installed and running just fine.
KPT Bryce 1 even without installation file)
What am I doing wrong?
Thx again, I am trying all I can

Re: unix wont refresh
Niklas, did you tell us what your host OS is? A iMac or some GNU/Linux machine?
Also what emulator are you using? Basilisk II or SheepShaver?
For your issue:
Given your host OS is OSX or macOS, you may inflate almost any file with The Unarchiver on you host computer.
Next you move the inflated file to your shared folder (called Unix on the emulator side).
Start the emulator and copy the item you put there to the emulated Mac´s HDD.
It is vital not to copy things to the Mac desktop, as MacOS had a desktop folder for each volume.
If you copy to the desktop, the file is still on the Unix drive and can´t be used normally by the MacOS.

Re: unix wont refresh
I am using a Macbookpro host OSX Yosemite and using Basilisk II Mac OS 7.5.3
Up until now I only tryed to open the unarchived files directly from Unix.
Copying them to the HD in Basilisk II now definitely works and is a great advice
Unfortunately I get the same default message when trying to open the recommended "Graphic Converter" file :/
(I am not sure which sytem the programs it presuppose. It says "for System 7.0-7.6 – Mac OSX" in the description)
The recommended JPGViewer gives me a .hqx file that neither my host nor BasiliskII can unpack
(any suggestions for unpacker alternatives ?)
I got Graphic Converter from Garden 4 up and running! (installing a .smi file on Basilisks HD)
I am not really sure what to do when a program download unpacks an "Program Disk.img" or ".img" in general. Can I get a program running with an ".img" file?
Or do i always need a .smi file to install?

Re: unix wont refresh
Type -192 suggests you're attempting to run the programs from the Unix drive?
This drive is solely for file transfer; it doesn't handle live access of resource forks well. Make sure to copy applications to the internal drive (not drag to the desktop) prior to running them.
