Capturing a Mac ROM image

Jim noticed a dead link and sent me a copy of his old guide to capturing a ROM image. I wikified his work:

http://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/capturing_rom

This originally appeared on his Mac Emulation Station and was for Basilisk, SoftMac, FUSION and vMac users as it was written long before SheepShaver appeared.

Accordingly, I'm not sure if this can be used for SheeShaver. Has anyone tried CopyROM or GetROM on a PPC machine?

MPC 601 and 750

Hi Clockwise,
I tried CopyROM on my two PPCs and earned a 4MB file good for nothing.
GetRom creates some 2MB files of the same category.
Greetings!

Many years ago I used a ROM grabber (most likely CopyROM) on a PowerBook 1400 and it produced a 4MB file. I'm pretty sure that is the file that I use with SheepShaver.

*goes to check*

Actually, it isn't. The file is in my SheepShaver folder so I must have tested it before. I just tested it now and it didn't work. Turns out I have actually been using the 1.8MB 'Mac OS ROM'.

I also used a ROM grabber to get the ROM from a Beige Power Mac G3, but it didn't work with SheepShaver. I think I posted a thread on that a while back.

Thanks, guys!

I will add a note to that effect to the article.

I wonder how oldworld rom images were acquired. They must have been extracted in some way from actual PPC machines.

Well, I don't know if it was the Rom Grabber utility I used. I was using OS 9, so that could have also been a factor, though all other precautions (turning off virtual memory, etc.) were taken.

For the old world ROM extraction subject, I tried it using Rom-grabber.sit (can be found on http://xstream.nwoca.org/downloads/?path=classic/) and I had no problem to get the ROM image from my old PowerMac 7200 and to make it SheepShaver run with it.

So now I have Mac OS 8.1 up and running with SheepShaver. Great !

mine wont work

Hi Brocoli,
I made another attempt with the file you named with my 7100.
In OS8 the system crashes when running the grabber.
In OS7.5 I am creating another useless 4MB file, that SS doesn't like.
Did you save the ROM file in a special way?
I am just wondering, what I am doing wrong.
Great thing, that you succeeded.

Try disabling all extensions plus vitual memory before running ROMgrabber.
