Hi all!
I'm looking to buy copies of 8.0, 8.5 & 9.0 from eBay and I notice that some of the auctions are for the CD only whereas others include the full retail box containing "Disk Tools" floppies or similar.
What I'd like to know is: if I'm wanting to use these older Mac OS disks _only_ for emulation purposes will I ever need these extra floppies or will the CD suffice?
Thanks,
D.
Advice wanted on buying old Mac OS for emulation

Hi,
The CD's suffice. As for the floppy disks: most floppy disk images can be downloaded from e.g. Apple and copied to a floppy if ever needed. We host some floppy disk images on our site.
But what's more: emulators discussed here don't support real Mac floppies anyway.
If you buy a copy of Mac OS on CD, make sure it is a universal install version, and not a version for some specific mac model or a restore CD.

Hi,
for an example of an universal system installer you might look here:
macintoshgarden.org
Apple System Software Recovery CD 1
or
Apple System Software Recovery CD 2
depending on the type of emulation and ROM you are planning to use.
Greetings!

Basilisk and SheepShaver don't boot from floppies, so a bootable floppy (disk tools or otherwise) is not very usefull to have included when buying an old Mac OS (as is the context of the question I answered).
And of course the old 400/800 floppies are not supported at all, as the host hardware can't handle them (in the case of the host being a PC).

Canonical Mac OS versions
Cat, 24bit thanks for your replies.
ps. macintoshgarden turned out to be doubly useful - it also had a copy of SpreadSheet2000 which I've been looking for some time.
