Return of the BONG

Post by 24bit »

Hello,
do you know what happened to the Mac startup sound?
MiniVMac does play it, as far as I know, some early versions of BasiliskII did it too.
The recent versions of BII and SS do not play a startup sound.
Why?
It would be pretty cool to have the "bong" back, wouldn't it?

Older versions of Basilisk II were able to extract the sound from the ROM as a WAV file. The latest versions of BII obviously don't have this ability (SS never did), but I believe you can add your own startup sound into the BII folder, if it is named properly (I can't remember what that filename is supposed to be unfortunately. :( )

On Mac OS X SheepShaver, a lot of time ago I had an Applescript app which played an startup sound (Performa 52xx, i think) and then booted SS... it was easy to do, just two lines of code.

No doubt the same thing could be done with Windows Batch/CMD scripting or GNU+Linux scripts.
