ROM Checksum Identification Tool?

Hi all! I recently was gifted VMware Workstation and have been enjoying setting up old software on a XP guest OS, including using Basilisk II running Mac OS 8.1.

I have a number of unlabeled ROM files from back when I bought dozens of 68k Macs off eBay starting around 20 years ago and wish to delete duplicates. Wasn't there some emulator that would show you the checksum of the selected ROM before powering on the emulator? I thought B2 did, but it isn't. Was is Fusion PC, SoftMac or some other tool whose name escapes me? (Maybe I'll setup a Win98se VM to explore Fusion PC next.)

I know the ROM capture tool gives the checksum when dumping from a Mac. But using the tool on an emulator gives the wrong checksum IIRC.

Thanks!

Hi,

The GUI for Basilisk 142/143 for Windows provides a checksum like this:

Rom type: 32-bit clean Mac II ROM (512KB/1MB)
Rom checksum from rom: 350EACF0
Rom checksum calculated: 350EACF0

More info:
Identified as Mac LC
AppleTalk is not supported.

Best,
Cat_7

Best of luck setting up Fusion PC in Windows 98SE!
I never managed to get Fusion running that way. A DOS VM does work, but I could not get reasonable sound support.
Here is the VirtualBox Fusion instance, in case you might be interested.

If some DOS guru could fix sound, that would be awesome.

Hahaha! I feel challenged now. I have many builds and beta versions of Fusion PC 2.0 up to Fusion PC Update 2.3.1. And Fusion PC 1.2.1.

I will try it out on VMware. I'll need the proper sound and CD-ROM drivers configured in autoexec.bat and config.sys.

Are you using Fusion 3.0 which was adulterated to go a little faster, but no doubt lost the ability to make sound or print. (I call it Darek's Dirty Little Secret. LOL)

Exactly, Fusion PC 3.0.
Sound was working for me on native W98SE and DOS, but not in VirtualBox.
Maybe VMWare is the way to go, but I seem to recall Fusion 3.0 was not working at all with a Windows 98SE instance in virtualisation.
If you would find a working solution for Fusion PC in a VM, it will sure be a nice addition.

Isn't it just a standard CRC32? There are any number of standard Windows utilities that can calculate that. Lots of archiver programs will also display the CRC32, so you can just zip them up and compare them that way.

Also, I seem to recall reports of Fusion working in DOSBox.

Probably also worth mentioning sentient06's tool here:

https://github.com/sentient06/MacROMan/ ... ntroller.m

It's a ROM Checksum identification tool; lists known ROMs (although it's missing some of the ones in my list).

Mac Emu, would you please compare the MD5s of your ROMs to the ones in the list here: https://github.com/adespoton/MacROMan/b ... index.html
(or https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... -Dk7QDyKPY)

This should help you identify your files, even though the tool on the page is OS X only. If you have any I'm missing, please let me know :)
