How do I install System 7.1.2 (PowerMac 6100 7100 8100)?

About SheepShaver, a PPC Mac emulator for Windows, MacOS X, and Linux that can run System 7.5.3 to MacOS 9.0.4.

How do I install System 7.1.2 (PowerMac 6100 7100 8100)?

Post by becreatim »

Hi I am using the current SheepShaver 2.5 version and I cannot launch 1994-03 - 9FEB69B3 - Power Mac 6100 & 7100 & 8100.ROM, https://www.macintoshrepository.org/703 ... ms-68k-ppc, an error message always appears: SheepShaver Error Unsupported ROM type.

This is the .iso file.
https://winworldpc.com/product/mac-os-7/71 -> Apple Mac OS 7.1.2 (PowerMac 6100 7100 8100) (ISO).

I want to install this PowerPC version with SheepShave, is there a workaround to make this possible? It looks like SheepShaver only supports from System 7.5.2 (PowerPC) version.

One question is this (System 7.1.2) the first PowerPC version from Apple?

Use a rom file that is known to be compatible with SheepShaver, in this case the "old world" rom file that can be found at the redundant robot site. See setup manual.

Your install disk is for specific Macs and not a general retail install disk. Even if SheepShaver can run this early PPC system version, you may not be able to install it in SheepShaver.

From the setup manual:

Only general retail Mac OS install CDs are fully compatible with SheepShaver. A system install CD that was originally provided with a new Mac will only install on that specific model.

You may be able to install in SheepShaver from a model-specific install CD using a special hack and you may be able to use a restore CD by copying the system manually. However, with both procedures, the installed system may or may not work and when it works, it may not be fully functional.

It's worth remembering a few things:

1. SheepShaver emulates a PPC Mac, but it doesn't emulate EVERY PPC Mac. It's more of a general purpose emulator that is known to be relatively compatible with a few PPC Mac hardware configurations.

2. SheepShaver patches the provided ROM image to do its job. If the ROM image you're using doesn't have the toolbox calls at the right offsets, this will fail.

3. As Ronald stated, attempting to install a device-specific version of an installer won't work for most models of PowerMac, even if you change the gestalt ID and use the matching ROM.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... Dk7QDyKPY/ outlines the ROMs developed by Apple and has comments about SheepShaver compatibility for the PPC ones. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... 2nWC9_t2w/ outlines the emulators that will emulate Macintosh hardware, and what emulators work with what OS version. SheepShaver is listed as being supported with 7.5.2 and higher; while there's a 7.1.2 PPC OS, it doesn't target a hardware set that SheepShaver emulates. You MAY get something to sort of work, by hacking around a bunch, but System 7.1 requires a System Enabler, and there's no enabler available for the hardware configuration SheepShaver emulates. By fiddling with the gestalt ID and ROM combination, and trying various enablers, you might get the OS to boot -- but it's not going to be stable, and it won't actually be emulating a PMx100.

I'll add my grain of salt here, I don't think it's possible to boot Mac OS 7.1.2 under SheepShaver. I've attempted this myself last year and could never get anything before System 7.5 to boot under SheepShaver, no matter the ROM I tried. I think one more reason to add here is it's because SheepShaver does not support smaller (earlier) ROM which Macs from the very early 1990's came with. SheepShaver really was designed for emulating Mac OS 8, IMO. And it's SUPER QUICK at doing so. But for other OS'es it's not that great.
