Mac OS <= 8.1 on SheepShaver on Windows?

From what I have read on this forum it seems that Mac OS < 8.5 is not usable with SheepShaver on Windows. Is this correct?

SheepShaver crashes with an "unknown software exception" when I try to boot from either my 8.1 CD or an existing disk image with 7.6.1 installed. I don't have a copy of any Mac OS version greater than 8.1. :(

If it matters, I'm using the binary from http://gwenole.beauchesne.free.fr/sheepshaver/files/ on Win2k SP4.

I have tried using two versions of the SDL shared library: the precompiled v1.2.7 from the libSDL site, and a Cygwin-built v1.2.6.

The ROM I am using is extracted from Apple's Mac OS ROM update.

My config file is as follows:

Code: Select all

disk sheep81.hfv
cdrom p:\
rom MacOSROM
windowmodes 3
screenmodes 63
seriala COM1
serialb COM2
bootdrive 0
bootdriver 0
ramsize 33554432
frameskip 0
gfxaccel true
nocdrom false
nonet false
nosound false
nogui false
noclipconversion false
ignoresegv true
jit true
jit68k false
keyboardtype 5
keycodes true
mousewheelmode 1
mousewheellines 3
idlewait true
enableextfs true
debugextfs false
extdrives CDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
pollmedia true
Thanks for any information. :)

From what I can gather, it seems that on Windows, SheepShaver is only useable with OS 8.5>9.0.4.

I would assume it would be some issue to do with supported ROMs since only new world ROM is supported in the Windows release...however the iMac was new world and ran OS 8.1....so.....imdonno....

ask Gwenole...

Then you should get an iMac (Rev A or B) origianl restore cd and extract the boot rom from it.

I got hold of a PowerMac 7600 ROM, which SheepShaver claims is unsupported. :(

But SheepShaver on Windows would not support it...would it?

It could since it's a new world rom, and SS supports most of them.
