Unlocking a Mac Os Cd rom to install the OS (help!)

Post by wolfwolf »

Hi,
I followed the excellent guide to setting up sheepshaver for windows, and it boots and loads up with Mac OS 8.5 imac version, or 8.6 imac version, but after it is running it won't let me install the OS as the disk is locked. I can't figure out how to unlock it as the lock is grayed out. It tells me that the Os can not be installed on my machine. Is this because I don't have a Rom from an Imac?
My stats, Winxp no sp, athlon 1400 756 ram.
My sheepshaver prefs file:
disk e:\SheepShaver2\SheepShaver\emptydisk500.hfv
rom e:\SheepShaver2\SheepShaver\Mac OS ROM
cdrom k:\
enableextfs true
windowmodes 7
screenmodes 63
bootdrive 0
bootdriver 0
ramsize 67108864
frameskip 0
gfxaccel true
nocdrom false
pollmedia true
nonet true
nosound true
nogui false
noclipconversion false
ignoresegv false
jit true
jit68k false
keyboardtype 5
keycodes true
mousewheelmode 1
mousewheellines 3
idlewait true

My mac os rom is 1,901 kb version.

Any help much appreciated.

i dont think you can install to the disk you are booting from, make a copy of your startup disk and install onto it.

If you are using a restore CD from an iMac it most likely won't work as most restore CD's are designed to only work with specific hardware.

If you are using a plain regular Mac OS disc provided with an iMac it should install but you must boot from CD with extensions off.

Many thanks, but that leads to the question: how do you turn the extentions off in sheepshaver?

To turn off extensions you start with the "shift" key pressed.
