stalled: install CD ejects & SS emulated env restarts, O

Post by macassist »

Hi folks,

trying to get SS working on my MacBook Pro.

I get the boot screen with flashing question mark disk icon if I don't have a disk inerted.

If I have a CD inserted, I get smiley, then the CD ejects, and SS's emulated environment restarts to the flashing question mark disk icon.

Here's my console.log:

SheepShaver V2.3 by Christian Bauer and Mar"c" Hellwig

ioctl(DKIOCCDREADTOC) failed: Bad file descriptor
ioctl(DKIOCEJECT) failed on file /dev/disk1: Bad file descriptor

There is a file /Volumes/MacAssist/Users/sean/test.img, and I've tried a few different disk images in different locations. I've also tried with and without the /Volumes/MacAssist prefix on paths.

Here's my .sheepshaver_prefs file:
rom /Volumes/MacAssist/Users/Shared/Downloads/SheepShaver-2.3/ROM
disk /Volumes/MacAssist/Users/sean/test.img
extfs /Volumes/MacAssist/Users/sean/classic

Running Mac OS X v10.4.5 on a 2GHz 15" MacBook Pro - had similar problems on a 17" iMac dual core.

Hope someone has some hints...

Hi,

I see nothing wrong with your config.

What rom are you using?
Which Mac OS are you trying to install?

Best results are with the universal system disks (8.5 to 9.0.4).

keep in mind that you'd need to have the Mac OS install CD actually in your disc drive -before- you run SheepShaver...... and i believe this holds true for any CD you wish to run in the Mac OS environment (at least if you're on the Windows version)

I've tried Mac OS 8.0, 8.1, 8.5, 9.0 and 9.1 CDs - all do the same. I'm using a 4MB Alchemy ROM from a 5400 as I need to run 8.0 for my Dad to use programs which won't run in Classic. I tested some of these CDs with the machine the ROM came from and it booted up, so it's not like the ROM won't natively support those OSes.

Thanks

Ok,

In the light of the information you gave us, I would go for a rom file incompatibility. Why don't you use the rom file from the system folder on 8.5 or 9.0 cd. That should work.

Best wishes,

But will the New World ROMs work with 8.0? That's what I need to work with.

Hi,

I am not 100% sure, but I believe SheepShaver doesn't run Mac OS below 8.5 on OSX.

So why don't you first try with 8.5 and it's rom or 9.0.
If you can get those to work, you know there is an issue with Mac OS below 8.5

Best wishes

Hi Cat,

Neither worked - the disk wasn't ejected, but SS just crashed out.

This is what I get with 8.5 and its ROM:

SheepShaver V2.3 by Christian Bauer and Mar"c" Hellwig
Reading ROM file...
WARNING: Cannot open /Volumes/MacAssist/Users/sean/test.img (No such file or directory)
Detected CPU features: MMX SSE SSE2

This is what I get from OS 9 and its ROM:

SheepShaver V2.3 by Christian Bauer and Mar"c" Hellwig
Reading ROM file...
WARNING: Cannot open /Volumes/MacAssist/Users/sean/test.img (No such file or directory)
ERROR: Unsupported ROM type.

Can anyone say if they've had success with OS 8.0 and Mac OS X's version of SheepShaver?

Regards

Sean
