iMac Duo (Intel) System 10.4.9. (Latest.)
ROM System 8.6 Version 1.6 May 14, 1999 (MacOSROM). SheepShaver boots off this.
System 8.6 installed on HD86.dmg from original iMac 333Mhz CD via SheepShaver. HD86.DMG generated by Disk Utility. GUI only generates documents rather than disk images which SheepShaver does not recognize.
Preference file generated via SheepShaverGUI.app.
Both SheepShaver apps are dated 5/14/06 10:56 AM. Latest version I found.
Problem: SheepShaver boots off of MacOSROM and not off the system folder on HD86.dmg.
I have "Show& Hide" and I have modified/trashed the prefs file till HELL FREEZES OVER. It isn't .RTF. I have tried various SheepShaverGUI.app Volume Unix Root/ to no avail.
.sheepshaver_prefs is in /Users/Mine generated by GUI.

disk /Users/Mine/SheepShaver/HD86.dmg
extfs /
screen win/640/480
windowmodes 0
screenmodes 0
seriala
serialb
rom /Users/Mine/SheepShaver/MacOSROM
bootdrive 0
bootdriver 0
ramsize 134217728
frameskip 1
gfxaccel true
nocdrom false

nosound false
nogui false
noclipconversion false

keycodefile /Users/Mine/SheepShaver/BasiliskII_keycodes
mousewheelmode 1
mousewheellines 3
dsp /dev/dsp
mixer /dev/mixer
ignoresegv false
idlewait true

I tried to attach .png images but they are not displayed.

/Users/Mine/SheepShaver/ contains :
Basiliskii_keycodes
Folder: DummyRoot which didn't help
Folder: General Documents
HD86.dmg (500MB)
MacOSROM (Update 1.0 1.9 MB Unix Executable File)
MacOSROMPB (Original version which did not have 8.6 Updater)
ppc.log (no idea what it is)
README.html
Folder: Shared (from earlier efforts)
SheepShaver.app
SheepShaverGUI.app

Hi,

I would like to go into the three things you mentioned above:

You can create disk images with the GUI, in fact I would recommend it. It is not important the resulting file looks like a document. After creation of the image it is added to the volumes list in the GUI, is it not? If so, the image should be OK to use. (You can add an extension to the filename if you want later on)
When you boot of cd, does Mac OS ask you to format it? That should be the case. The already formatted images created with disk utility might pose problems.

When you say sheepshaver boots off of the rom image, you mean you get no error message? Booting off of the rom file only can't be possible, you need a cd or hard disk image to get to the desktop. Can you describe what you get when you start SheepShaver?

The ppc.log file contains statistic and error information about sheepshavers power pc emulator.

Furthermore, I would like to suggest you try to get the rom image from the Mac OS Rom update 1.0. (available at apple's site). It seems the most compatible rom image to use.
And, for you convenience, you could try the OSX gui linked here:

Best wishes,

Am using update 1.0. See 7th line from bottom.
Used the OSX gui to generate a new.dsk. Edited the preference file because GUI does not allow selecting deeper than my user name.
Reloaded system 8.6 and it works now!!!!!

I only use this intel iMac to browse the internet. Everything else is done in Excel 4, Word 5.1, CricketGraph II, and all the other applications I have been using for many years which will be loaded tomorrow.

Thanks Cat_7

HD86.DMG generated by Disk Utility.
1. Disk images created by Disk Utility on Intel Mac cannot be used to boot MacOS. It is possible to convert those images with Disk Utility to make them useable as MacOS boot volume, but it is much simpler to create a boot disk image with SheepShaverGUI (or SheepShaverPrefs).

2. Disk images created by Disk Utility on Intel Mac can be used in SheepShaver for other purposes, they will mount on the MacOS desktop.

3. If a disk image file that is created by SheepShaverGUI (or by SheepShaverPrefs) is given a .dmg file extension, it can be mounted in MacOSX.

(SheepShaverPrefs is a more Mac-like replacement for SheepShaverGUI)
