System 9.0.4 with Finder 9.2.2 in Sheepshaver
Yes, though System 9.2.2 still don't work, yet Finder 9.2 (The FINAL version of Classic Finder) run under Sheepshaver along with System 9.0+PowerPC enabler 9.0.4, at least Chinese version.
I think many other updated components in 9.2.2 will also work in 9.0.4 so you can still benefit from them within Sheepshaver.

Ewe! Does it give you a pink anime background?
(Cool!)
This reminds me of 1999 when we were trying to get Basilisk II to run Mac OS 8.0 or 8.1 by using the System 7.5.x Finder. Back then Basilisk II could only support up to Mac OS 7.6.1 with a buggy 68030 emulated processor. Doing the Finder replacement trick would run "Mac OS 8.x" but stuff like copying files would crash Basilisk II.
Heh, I wonder if SheepShaver will ever support Mac OS X?

It still don't work. 9.0.4's and 9.2.2's OT worked OK on MacPPC Sheepshaver with slirp networking, but both aren't working in SS Mac or Windows with router networking, and crash SS itself when used with SS Windows slirp networking.yksoft1 wrote:I need to try whether 9.2.2's Open Transport components work for me in SS Windows. 9.0.4's never worked (with Basilisk II Router network) and I have to replace them with OT components in 8.6.

Well, possible to imagine , but unlikely we will see it in reality.JeanJacquesCortes wrote:Is it possible to imagine a future version of Sheep Shaver which manages Mac OS 9.1 and 9.2.x ?
MacOS 9.1-9.2.2 is very different from MacOS 9.0.4 and earlier in the way it handles memory. To be able to run 9.1-9.2.2, SheepShaver should include emulation of a MMU (Memory Management Unit). Even if someone would build such a MMU emulator, the result could be emulation with memory access that is so slow that it would hardly be useable.

TomeViewer works for upgrading the Finder.Jorpho wrote:It's possible to update 9.0.4 to 9.2.2 via free downloads from Apple, isn't it? Is it easy to extract the relevant files from those updates and stick them into an existing 9.0.4 installation?
AFAIK the Startup Disk control panel and many more from 9.2.2 will crash SS.

That's right, SheepShaver cannot run 9.1 or later.JeanJacquesCortes wrote:From Mac OS 9.0.4, I updated to 9.1, but at relauch, SheepShaver crashed.
But this topic is not about updating to 9.1 or later, it is about replacing individual files in a 9.0.4 installation by files from 9.1-9.2.2, like the 9.2 Finder.

Wait... Did you use an official 9.1 update CD, or the downloadable update?JeanJacquesCortes wrote:From Mac OS 9.0.4, I updated to 9.1, but at relauch, SheepShaver crashed.
My understanding is that some of the old Powermacs could not be updated to OS 9.1 without a bootable CD running OS 9.1, and that the downloadable version of the update wouldn't work (link). But if the downloadable update installs under Sheepshaver, that would suggest that it is possible to make such a bootable CD from within Sheepshaver (even though it wouldn't actually work with Sheepshaver).
Does that make any sense?

You misunderstand me... It still won't work with Sheepshaver, if I understand correctly - OS 9.1 requires the MMU regardless of what upgrade path you use.JeanJacquesCortes wrote:I tried to upgrate to 9.1 using the downloadable version. I will try with the Upgrate CD. Thank you for the information !
My thought was simply that I could use Sheepshaver to create a CD containing the OS 9.1 boot files that I could then use with an ancient PowerMac 6100 (which can't use the downloadable update).

You may need to install two universal copies of 9.0 (use custom install to make an universal System Folder), upgrade one to 9.1 and boot from another 9.0 start disk, make a non-compressed image including bootable 9.1 system folder(6100s don't need a Mac OS ROM in System Folder in other to boot) with Disk Copy and burn the image (after mount the SheepShaver image containing the new Disk Copy image) to CD in OSX.Jorpho wrote:You misunderstand me... Re: System 9.0.4 with Finder 9.2.2 in Sheepshaver
I know this is an ancient thread, but I thought I'd post that I'm currently writing this from SheepShaver -- IE 4.5 on System 9.0.4 with all the goodies from 9.2.2 (including Finder) that work, with the rest rolled back to 9.0.4. I also did the extra tweak of adding Quicktime 4 and changing the vers resource in the system to 9.2.2 -- so *most* software works as if it was in Classic mode now (except for the stuff that actually *requires* 9.2.2 APIs instead of just checking the versinfo -- not many).
