Hi,

I can't take credit for the SheepShaver program. Others program it. I only sometimes provide ready-made builds from the source code.

About you suggestion: We can only hope some developer reads it and changes the GUI as you suggest.

Still waiting to be done:

The vertical lines while fullscreen 800x600 in some games ? When in windowed no problem but in fullscreen that's really annoying. (Want to play Airburst again !!) :)

The CD-ROM reader to translate Mac CD's because i have plenty of old SVM Mac and MacWorld CD's i cannot read through sheepshaver :( It tells me the Drive is unrecognized and needs to be formatted.

And the last thing i think many are demanding, i know it will be difficult because i don't understand emulation programming is to use the 3D hardware for many games i want to play again ? Many emulators are working within hardware acceleration actually.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Cheers !

You are aware that regular development of SheepShaver (and BasiliskII) stopped 9 (yes, nine!) years ago?

Occasional improvement and fixes were added to the source code by various users with advanced programmer skills since. Someone like that would need to read you comments and take an interest in looking into these issues and have the time to look into it.

There are several topics here about reading Mac-CDs in SheepShaver for Windows. Depends also on whether you run 32-bit or 64-bit Windows. In 64-bit Windows you will need to make .iso images from the CDs to use them. However, there is a test build that seems to have solved the issue. See this section in the setup manual: http://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/she ... patibility

As far as I know, the 3D hardware would need to be emulated, the emulator cannot use the hardware on your machine.

Just to be clear: it's theoretically possible to pass through calls to your computer's video card -- but this would be pointless, as current graphics cards have virtually nothing in common with the ATi Rage card from back in the day. You'd have to either emulate the old card, or do JIT translation from those antiquated graphics calls to OpenGL.

And all of this assumes that someone with the time, skill and knowledge to implement such a thing is actually willing to learn and modify the 9-year-old codebase, instead of putting a similar effort into an active project such as QEmu.

I think it's useful only when emulating Windows.

It is possible to implement 3dfx support and could provide some utility, but it is much more useful for Windows, since nearly any game that runs with Glide can run in Windows and people are already using wrappers or emulators to do this for PC's. 3dfx cards might be useful for Quickdraw 3D and OpenGL support, but the ATI Rage series seemed to have better-ish support as time went on (those could at least run OpenGL 1.2.1, whereas 3dfx went bankrupt just before 1.2.1 was released...so it can only go up to 1.1).

Also, since Sheepshaver has shoddy processor emulation, it will be quite difficult to get it working. X.Org has some drivers for the ATI Rage 128 and those could be used for reference's sake, since the official documentation for the Rage 128 appears to have disappeared off the face of the Internet.

Hi folks!

I´m certainly a bit late on this, as I´m on OSX usually.
Just wanted to confirm that the SheepShaver_01-03-2015 build does work fine in W10-64
and that my old Mac CDs may be opened again on a Windows 64bit host. Great!
Windows merely complains about not being able to open the volume with two windows - I can live with that. :)

A Toast CD from 1994 on a Windows machine in 2016 - just perfect:

One might even guess that Windows will be the future home of the Sheep
with Apple stripping out more and more support for apps that old.

Hi. I'm new to emulation and am having problems with getting Basilisk II to recognize any roms when getting ready to star tthe process. I have done emulation for mostly consoles that are simple like Project 64/ZSnes.etc just to see if I could do it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUJznUyiA8E

I followed the instructions on this video which is technically for Sheep Shaver but worked on Basilisk II up till a certain point in the video:

I renamed New W Rom to Mac OS ROM with zero extensions as instructed for the rom path and added the two files on the volumes tab as instructed which I got the OS9.img from the same place as instructed on the video JUST to be sure I was on the same page as he is with no conflicts or so I thought.

I pressed start and an image of a floppy disk appeared then crashed my computer by taking over my mouse making it stuck on the upper left corner of my host screen forcing me to do a hard shut down the bad way and I almost couldn't get my Windows 7 back up. The graphics got really weird too showing only a tiny portion of my Windows 7 before I did a hard restart a few times.

Is that normal behavior for it? None of the other roms images like Performa work and just cause Basilisk II or Sheep Shaver to shut down saying it's *stopped working from an unexpected error*.

I would like to play some old games but it seems Mac OS emulation on 64 bit windows may now longer be supported? If so will there ever be such support or if I'm doing something wrong in following that video what is it? Could the video be wrong because he shows it working in the end.,

The instructions for SheepShaver do not work with BasiliskII. The rom file you downloaded is not compatible with BasiliskII and BasiliskII does not run OS9.

If you want to set up BasiliskII for Windows, see the setup guide here: http://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/basilisk_ii_setup
and please post questions in the BasiliskII forum.

Hi. How do I get sound in SS?

I am a windows 64 bit user and installed SheepShaver with Mac OS 8.5 to play old educational software that no longer works on Windows but I have no sound even though the install went thru with success.

I even installed my game I want which was an ISO image that you set to *read only* and add to the volumes list which the game then showed it's contents in the OS and I got the game to turn on but there is no sound output at all.

I went to the sound control panel to test it with it's various noises and nothing plays when I do that either so I know it's the emulator somehow and not the game having fits.

Any work arounds that doesn't involve hex editing or really complicated programming which I have to walk on hot coals then do the limbo with Chubby Checker while at the same time sacrificing a child to the volcano god?

BTW: Should I do the hot coals first or the Limbo Rock to fix the SS sound problem? :)

I fixed my issue with sound which was the purpose of my post. How do I delete it? I see no delete button? Should I use my wand and chant "Posto Deleto" to delete any post that I want that I no longer need?

Nope; your question and answer might help the next person who searches this site because they've got a similar issue.

And having said that, how did you fix the issue? Even if it's "I turned up the volume on my host device" it would likely be useful to others.

Hi!

first of all, thanks a lot to everyone who made this possible.
I did just setup sheepshaver with macOS 9 and i'm litterally drowning in nostalgia.

playing Power Pete for the first time after 15 years is great :D and there are a lot of games on my list (Ares, Harry the handsome executive, apeiron...)

But I had some problems setting up SS:

1) I had no sound, like Whereisit up here. I solved the problem by going in the macOS control panel, sound, and selecting "built-in", even if it is the only choice.

2) IE 5 makes SS crash when trying to reach images on the apple website (defaut website). "Sheepshaver.exe stopped working". Is there a simple way to check if my ethernet settings are ok?

3) If I run SS in fullscreen in my native res (1440*900), I get red/pink columns all over the screen. In windowed mode at lower res (1200*800), everything is allright.

Thanks a lot. i'm super happy right now :D

edit: added 3)

Here's some feedback for you:
0) Ares requires graphics acceleration I think, so won't run under emulation. Check the compatability list on here, or on the Macintosh Garden to save yourself some time trying to get a title working that doesn't.
1) That's in the setup documentation on here :)
2) This is also in the documentation on here -- IE 5 is buggy on SS; you want to use Classilla. I believe there's a patch that makes IE 5 work, but I can't recall what it is -- maybe it's in the wiki here?
3) How about in full screen at 1200*800? I can't use full screen on my Mac, because the pixel depth is off, causing 1440*900 to be a tiny rectangle in the bottom left of the screen. But that doesn't sound like your problem.

Hello,
im new user for emulator and Mac 9 and have few questions:
1) Is there still max 2000 MB harddisk file limit? Some games are quite big.
2) How to set Classila as default browser?
3) Its possible to make OpenGL Games as Quake 1,2,3 , Warcraft III working?
4) Its possible to fix some old games as Warcraft I which runs extremely slowly?
5) Its possible mount windows folder to Mac Desktop like in case of WinUAE,
it would be better that share whole drive letter, im using for that - USB drive its safer.
6) I installed Titanium for toast hangling, but mounting is slow, its possible to assosiate .toast
with for automount after double click?

1) Yes and no; for OS 9, you can go higher, just format as HFS+. But there's generally no reason to, as games aren't generally larger than 2GB for OS 9, and you can have as many volumes mounted as you want.
2) Use Internet Config
3) No, because those require hardware acceleration, and SheepShaver doesn't emulate graphics hardware, nor pass the OGL calls through to the host's graphics hardware. This *might* end up getting done in qemu.
4) Probably not; SheepShaver and Warcraft are both not currently in development.
5) You can do whatever you want; just set your shared folder to the path that you want to share. Remember that this is purely for file transfer though; the "sharing" only really works in the Finder, not with other running applications.
6) Yes, using Internet Config. You could also use the faster image mounter software linked somewhere in these forums (I forget its name and link at the moment).

adespoton thanks for reply.

1) I have tried it in Shapeshifter gui, i could input bigger size, but image is still less that 2 GB, i have tried - 4000 - and i got 0 zero size HDD file and 8000 MB and got 1700 MB file. Its working for you?
More images is nightmare, i prefer just few of them in every OS, usually 2 - system and data volume, and maybe some optimal crypted volume for work, porn and personal stuff. Some games has up to 1,5GB, have volume with 2 games is like old one more floppy / cd days.

2) Where is this wizzard located? I deleted some internet item form desktop, right after installation, i dunno if it was this config, or some alias.

3) Its shame, would be nice add this info into emulator features description, i bet that in these days, are people mainly using emulator for gaming.
With my attitude to QEMU, if is not guaranteed i would not touch it, is big time waster.

4) BTW is something like, possiblity change emulator settings when machine is already started or something some hidden, non GUI config features?
Settings are pretty limited.

5) Its not working for me, i added some windows folder through volume wizzard and shapefinder even doesnt started.

6) Ok, i would still be grateful for SW name, is hard to find for me, lots of links.

7) New ones:
Its possible change rom, after installation or same installed System files are rom related? BTW which roms is best for gaming? Im using one from 1999 - 1.6, because of some tutorial, but there are new ones from 2003.

8) I tried just for to be ready for future OpenGL fix, Vampire: The Masquarade date, i have used Virtual CD rom for toast mount, problem is that during installation is required disk second cd change and whole Finder is locked on this dialog. Is there any possiblity how to change cd? I tried mount both cds before installation but its not detected..

9) Some game move dock when started i dont know, how to move it back???

9) Some files cant be deleted because there locked, how to unclock them?

Sorry for not reading through all the above, just my 2c:

I´m using the 4MB OldWorldROM on all my rigs, which was included with Cat_7´s DL links and is also available via RedundantRobot.
The 4MB ROM boots images made under Old- and NewWorld ROM, 2MB ROM does not boot images made under OldWorld on my side.

ClickStarter can be pulled at the title area, ControlStrip can be pulled at the little handle at its end while the Mac Alt key is pressed.
In Windows this key is mapped to the Alt key by default.

Locked items may be deleted by pressing the Mac Alt key while you empty the dustbin.
Items locked on the host may not work.

Some prebuilt big images are located here: http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/disk-images-emulators

1) I never use the GUI; easier just to create a file of the appropriate size, point to it in prefs, and then format it when prompted by OS 9. I avoid going above 4GB.

2) It's a control panel, IIRC; actually, it's a regular application/extension combo, but is in the Control Panels folder.

4) Better to go with the config file than to trust the GUI. You have more control there, and a few extra options. All documented here on the wiki :)

5) Do it from the prefs file when SheepShaver isn't running. Don't use the GUI. Make sure permissions are correct.

7) Use the New World ROM you're using. It is the one the emulator was developed to work with.

8) Not sure; I've never encountered this issue, as I don't tend to play CD-ROM games under SheepShaver. Most CD-ROM games will also play under OS X 10.4, which works better for me.

9a) 24bit answered this one.

9b) Depends how they're locked; get info, uncheck the locked box will work for most.

The latest QT version that is compatible with SheepShaver is 4.1.2.

Maybe you can startup with extensions disabled.

It is not possible to downgrade QT by simply installing an earlier version. One must first remove all QT related files from the Extensions and Control Panels folders manually. Note that several QT related files do not have QuickTime or QT in their file names.
