Booting sheepshaver in windows with command and option keys

Post by majorgoo »

Hi,

I've had a problem where I need to rebuild the desktop file, and can do this by holding down command and option (start key and ALT in windows), however, sheepshaver ignores my keypresses and just boots normally, instead of prompting a desktop file rebuild as stated here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2344?viewlocale=en_US

Is there anything I can do to get around this? I need to resolve this issue to use several of my apps correctly.

Thanks.

Hi,

Is your problem related to the apps not showing the correct icon? It might depend on the way you got them into the emulator whether rebuilding the desktop will solve that. if you copied them using the shared folder option (My computer on your desktop) then such a problem might arise. If you copy programs with HFV explorer onto the SheepShaver hard disk image, then the icons can be preserved. Main issue is not allowing windows access to uncompressed files, because it will strip information from those files.

To (hopefully) answer your question: pressing key combination on SheepShaver startup have to be timed very accurately. So perhaps you need to try several times to get it right.

Best,

Maybe you press the keys too early. On a real Mac you can startup while holding the keys, but in SheepShaver the "Mac" is not yet there to receive the key down when you press and hold the keys already before startup. You need to wait until the emulated machine is alive. Try pressing the keys when the extension icons start marching along the bottom of the screen and hold the keys until you see the dialog asking if the desktop files should be rebuilt.

Kill the (SheepShaver) Finder using command-option-Esc, then hold down command-option while it is re-launching.

Myself, I find it's much easier to use this with SheepShaver. I couldn't get the keys to work before so I downloaded this and it worked fine. Hopefully this helps.

rebuilding the desktop without keystrokes during startup

Another option that works for me for rebuilding the desktop file, at least in OS 8.6, which is what I use in SS (though it is advertised to work through OS 9.0.4), is the old freeware version of TechTool, 1.2.1, still available for download from Micromat at this address:
