Question
Hello, i DLed the rom file from apples ftp, but i can't use it as it are a smi.bin file. How can i extract the file?
You can't. But what you can do, if you have already set up Basilisk II with a working 68K Mac ROM is use TomeView to get at the ROM:

I have the same problem. I have tried setting the OS 8.6 CD as boot option and renaming the extracted Rom file to .rom extension and still I get the error that I need a ROM Image from a 4Mb PCI PowerMac.
Very annoying! Does anyone know why this happens or how to rectify it? I am using RedHat 9.1 and OS 8.6 (I have tried the ROM on the CD and the ROM extracted from the ROM Update).

I am almost 100% I used TomeView properly in BII. I ended up with a file called MacOS Rom exctarcted with a Mac Classic stlye icon on my OS 8 Desktop which I tried to use in SheepShave. Also tried a staright copy of the ROM on the 8.6 install CD found in System Folder\System. Neither worked.
I may eventually end up trying Slackware or Mandrake but I would like to try to get this distro to work before I spend ages d/ling another!

Sorry for digging up this old topic, but the link to download TomeView is broken on that site. Where else can I get it?ClockWise wrote:You can't. But what you can do, if you have already set up Basilisk II with a working 68K Mac ROM is use TomeView to get at the ROM:

You are right. I get "404 - Apple Ninja Lawyers were never here"

I found it, but when I try to boot SheepShaver with a Disk Tools 8.5 disk image, as soon as the screen displays "Mac OS", it closes.Mac Emu wrote:You are right. I get "404 - Apple Ninja Lawyers were never here"

Unfortunately, I don't have a Mac OS CD. Can I write the OS 8.5 disk image to a CD-R and will SheepShaver boot from it?Mac Emu wrote:Rename the ROM file to have no spaces.
SheepShaver won't boot off that image set as a hard drive file. Instead, add the following lines to your prefs file and boot off your Mac OS 8.5 retail CD:
cdrom E:
nocdrom false
(where E: is your CD-ROM drive of course.)
