Not Enough Virtual Memory for extension error

Post by robbo007 »

Hi,
I've downloaded the latest build and I get this warning when I start:

There is not enough virtual memory to continue booting with extension enabled. Extensions have been disabled for this boot. Use Memory Control Panel to make more virtual memory available.

Any ideas? I've checked the control panel and I'm using 512K which seems to be the limit. I cant increase anymore.

Regards,
Rob

Please provide more information.

On which host system (OSX or Windows) do you use SheepShaver? Which MacOS version do you use?

Are you setting up a new configuration? Or did you replace an older SheepShaver build with the new one in an existing configuration and does the older build still work when put back again?

I am getting this error with SheepShaver on my new Mac mini (2018) with macOS 10.14.1 and SheepShaver 2.5. Also with the older build that I had on my previous Mac that worked.

Please provide more information.
- Is this error produced by the host macOS or by the guest MacOS?
- Did you try to set up SheepShaver or can't you set up SheepShaver because of the error?
- Or did you migrate from another Mac with SheepShaver setup?
- At which point does the error occur?

Thank you for your reply Ronald. I think I figured out the cause. Having the memory size set too low. The default SheepShaver picks is 16 MB. After I found and moved my old invisible preference files from an old backup I discovered I had it set to 512 MB on my old computer and it worked fine. The solution appears to be increasing the memory setting until it works. I had been trying decreasing before I moved the preference file.

And to answer your questions…
- The error is produced by the guest Mac OS 9.
- With the error in place, Mac OS 9 ran but with extensions forced off.
- I originally moved my old SheepShaver setup manually, not via Migration Assistant.
- The error occurred during the startup of Mac OS 9.

Yes, the default 16MB is way to small (and SheepShaver does not have working virtual memory).

See the updated setup manual for the preferred settings: https://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/sh ... os_x_setup
